A half-length portrait of Benjamin Rotch, barrister, chairman of the board of Middlesex magistrates & MP. As an MP he was particularly active working for reform of British patent law. His father, also Benjamin, was a Nantucket whaler who established a whale fishery operating from Milford Haven. Published in "Portraits of the Worthies of Westminster-Hall, with their Autographs; being Fac-Similies of Original Sketches, Found in the Note-Book of a Briefless Barrister". Only Part I of this work was published: an attempt to fund Part II by subscription failed.
