Ismael Boulliau (1605 - 1694) was a French clergyman and amateur mathematician who proposed an inverse square law for gravitation before Newton. Boulliau was one of the earliest members of the Royal Society, London, having been elected on April 4, 1667, seven years after its founding. By Pierre Louis van Schuppen (1627 - 1702).
