King George II (1683-1760); reigned 1727-60. The only son of George I: still a Hanoverian at heart, British affairs being guided mainly by Queen Caroline and Sir Robert Walpole and, later, by William Pitt the elder. An enthusiast for army dress and uniform; the last sovereign to command in the field, at Dettingen in 1743. This portrait of George when he was the Prince of Wales.
