Gibraltar from the Sea. [&] Gibraltar from the Mainland[?].
[Captain Peter William Hamilton, R.N., 1812-1868.]
[n.d., 1833-42.]
Pair of pencil sketches. Sheets 70 x 330mm, 2¾ x 13", and 90 x 330mm, 3½ x 13". Folded for inclusion in a sketchbook.
Hamilton's active naval career spanned 1833 to 1842 and, apart from his early stay in Jamaica, his postings make it hard to pinpoint the date of these sketches. As a young master's mate Hamilton served on board HMS Malabar in the Mediterranean 1835-36 and Iberia in 1836-7. He later served in the Royal Navy during the First Opium War (1839-42), seeing action at Hong Kong which he also recorded in his sketch album. He would have undoubtedly visited Gibraltar many times.
From a sketchbook compiled by Hamilton.
[Ref: 12749] £280.00
