From Walter William May's 'Series of Fourteeen Sketches Made During the Voyage up Wellington Channel in Search of Sir John Franklin'. Under Sir Edward Belcher five ships entered the Arctic to search for Franklin and the crews of the 'Erebus' and 'Terror', missing from an earlier expedition. Four out of the five vessels were abandoned in pack ice, for which Belcher was court-martialled, but acquitted.
