The bust of George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759), composer, as commemorative a coin or medallion (inscribed with the date 1784 in Roman numerals). Probably a frontispiece to a volume of Handel's works, numbered 'Pl.I' upper right. Born in Saxony, Handel settled in London in 1712 where for nearly fifty years he poured out opera, oratorios, concertos and occasional music. His Messiah, first performed in Dublin in 1742, became a national institution within his lifetime.
