Very fine hand-coloured etching, 220 x 380mm (8¾ x 15"), with large margins Tears in edges of paper. Surface dirt and light staining in margins.
Satirical scenes illustratrating Shakespeare's famous monologue from 'As You Like It.' The speech compares the world to a stage and life to a play, and catalogues the seven stages of a man's life, sometimes referred to as the seven ages of man: infant, schoolboy, lover, soldier, justice, pantaloon, and second childhood, "sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything".

Oval portrait of the actress Lavinia Fenton (1708-60), with verse praising her performance as the original Polly Peachum in John Gay's 'Beggar's Opera', January 1728. In April she ran off with Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton; Gay wrote to Jonathan Swift: ''The Duke of Bolton, I hear, has run away with Polly Peachum, having settled £400 a year on her during pleasure, and upon disagreement £200 a year''. A woman stands holding a basket of poultry. Behind, a man slips an arm into the basket while pushing another man away. A scene from George Farquhar's 1706 play 'The Recruiting Officer', which follows the social and sexual exploits of two officers, the womanising Plume and the cowardly Brazen, in the town of Shrewsbury as they recruit soldiers. Half-length portrait of Irish actress Margaret 'Peg' Woffington (c. 1720-60), holding a volume with a portrait of Shakespeare on the cover, a finger being used to hold her place. Woffington danced and acted at various Dublin theatres until 1740, when her success as Sir Harry Wildair in 'The Constant Couple' led to her being given her London debut at Covent Garden. She lived openly with David Garrick, the foremost actor of the day, and her other love affairs were notorious. CS: 391. Ex: collection of The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.
