A full-length portrait of Irish actor Spranger Barry (1719-77), a daggar in each hand. He was a rival of David Garrick: in 1750 the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane and the Covent Garden Theatre put on competing performances of 'Romeo and Juliet', and the critics preferred Barry's Romeo to Garrick's.
