Four cricket ephemera items for Carshalton Cricket Club, Beddington. Probably a unique collection of cricket ephemera. An invitation published August 28th, 1856, detailing the events of a Harvest Festival to be celebrated on September 2nd, 1858. Starting with a service at the Parish church, 'at half-past two o'clock a dinner will be provided for the labourers and their wives in the National School Room; after which a cricket match will be played in the rectory field'. On the inside right-hand page of the invitation is the Hymn for Harvest. Two 'Carshalton Cricket Club' cards, one showing the matches for the year 1855, and the other for the year 1859. Lastly, two letters, one letter dated August 2nd 1855, from the Hon. Secretary of Carshalton Cricket Club, requesting a cricketer to play at a match commencing at 10:30 o'Clock, on August 8th 1855. The letter attached, is dated May 7th 1855, and informs a player that the club will meet for practice on Wednesday, May 16th, and every Wednesday of the season commencing.

Children playing cricket, a reversed version of Gravelot's 1739 engraving, which is believed to be the first representation of cricket to be published. In 1748 a version of this print was used by George Bickham as the heading to a page in “The British Monarchy,” a two-volume work on the counties of England. In this, it was used as the heading to the section on Shropshire. The original showed a right-handed batsman, but Bickham’s printers reversed the engraving so that the batsman appears left-handed. They also added the arms of Shrewsbury at the top of the picture and excluded one figure at the side. The rococo border was extended to the top of the picture and has flowers added. The number 3 in the top right corner would suggest that this is one in a series of prints. “La Crosse” was used in French to define cricket for many years, starting with Cotgrave’s French/English Dictionary of 1611

Aged 49 Years a native Northamptonshire, Performed the following Pedestrian Feats. 1st Decr.26.1815, compleated on Blackheath, 1100, miles, on the Barclay plan, viz. a mile every hour. 2d. July 20th, 1816, at the same place he walked 1100 miles, comencing each mile within 20 mintues after each hour. 3rd. Decr. 5th. 1816, on Brixton Causeway he accomplished 1998 half miles in 1998 succeeding half hours. 4th. June 18th.1817, this was a task of competitorship between Baker & himself on Wormwood Scrubs & which he accomplished in one hour less than the given time making 2000 miles in 42 days. 5th. Sept. 6th.1817, a grand match against time walking from Colchester to London one day & returning to Colchester the next & so on for 20 succeeding days, being 1020 miles.

Shown here are some of the professionals: Clarke, Alfred Mynn, William Hillyer, George Parr, William Lillywhite & William Denison; and a notable amateur, Nicholas 'Felix' Wanostrocht, the artist of this portrait. In 1859 the first ever overseas cricket tour, playing in the United States and Canada, included six members of the All-England Eleven.

Mallam, agent for Spiers and Pond, the promoters.

George Robert Canning Harris (1851-1932), 4th Baron Harris, GCSI, GCIE. A keen cricketer, he played for Eton, Kent (for over 40 years) and Oxford University. He became the second-ever captain of the English cricket team, leading a tour of Australia in 1878-9 on which a test match at Melbourne was lost by ten wickets. In 1909 he played an important role in organising the Imperial Cricket Conference, which started with only three nations (England, Australia and South Africa) but expanded to include the West Indies, New Zealand and India under his guidance. His service as Governor of the Presidency of Bombay (1890-5) is not so highly regarded, as he was far more interested in sport than administration. When he left India, having virtually ignored famine, riots and sectarian unrest, a publisher circulated a collection of newspaper extracts from his time as governor. The introduction stated: 'Never during the last hundred years has a Governor of Bombay been so sternly criticised and never has he met with such widespread unpopularity on account of his administration as Lord Harris'.

The Oval has been the home ground of Surrey County Cricket Club since it was built in 1845. It was the first ground in England to host international Test cricket, in September 1880. The final Test match of the English season is traditionally played there.
