Half-length portrait of Charles Asgill (1762-1823) in his dress uniform. Asgill found fame when, having being taken prisoner at the surrender at Yorktown, he was sentenced to death by George Washington in retaliation for the death of an American captain at Loyalist hands. Asgill's mother appealed to Louis XVI, who sent an ambassador who successfully requested a reprieve. Asgill later wrote a letter to an American newspaper detailing the treatment he received in captivity, including beatings by drunken revellers who had paid money to enter his cell.

Sir John Fielding (1721-80), known as the 'Blind Beak', having blinded in the navy aged 19. In 1750 he became the assistant of his older brother, Henry Fielding, magistrate of Bow Street, aiding him in the setting up of the Bow Street Runners, the first professional police force, and the Police Gazette, a list of known criminals circulated around London. Henry (now better known as a novelist) died in 1754 and John took his place as magistrate. It is said he was able to recognize three thousand criminals by their voices alone. Engraving published in the 'The Tyburn chronicle: or, Villainy display'd in all its branches'.

On trial for 'coining' (counterfeiting) in 1714, Jane Housden was being brought down to the dock when William Johnson, a butcher with a conviction for highway robbery (although pardoned), tried to talk to her. When the gaoler Spurling told him he would have to wait until the trial was over Johnson pulled a pistol and shot him dead. Housden's trial was halted and both tried for murder and convicted. Despite having the entire court as witnesses for the prosecution, both continued to deny the offence until their executions on the 14th September. Johnson was then hanged in chains near Holloway, between Islington and Highgate. Engraving published in the 'The Tyburn chronicle: or, Villainy display'd in all its branches'.
