H. Carraccio pinx: [...] F. Piloty del [c.1820]
Lithograph, sheet 420 x 370mm (16½ x 14½").
Lithograph after a painting here attributed to Annibale or Agostino Carracci, from 'Königlich Baierischer Gemälde-Saal zu München und Schleissheim in Steindruck', a very large series of prints reproducing old master and modern drawings in Munich collections, published between 1816 and 1821. The lithographs were drawn by Ferdinand Piloty (as here) and his partner J.N. Strixner. Unlike its predecessor 'Les Ouevres Lithographiques' (1810-16), this series went beyond reproducing works of the German school to represent the entire painting collection in Munich. These prints were made while the technique of lithography was still in its infancy- colour lithograph was yet to be introduced and so the printmakers used one or two tint stones to add greater subtlety to the prints.
For other plates from the series see refs. 43534, 43535 etc.

Francis Bartolozzi, Esq.r
London, Pub 12 Oct. 1783 by R. Menageot, No.49 Broad Street, Soho
Stipple printed in brown, scarce, platemark 155 x 130mm (6¼ x 5"), with very large margins. Repaired wormhole title area
Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815), Florentine engraver who was elected a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768 (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case). Bartolozzi met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in Italy in 1763, and Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England Bartolozzi became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. The reproductive engraver Robert Menageot (1748-1783, fl.) published his original profile portrait of Bartolozzi in 1778. This slightly different plate, published by Menageot, was presumably made five years later because the success of the first plate had caused the plate to wear down from printing so many impressions.

[Sir Balthazar Gerbier and his Family
[Sir Balthazar Gerbier and his Family From the Original Picture, painted by Sir Ant: van Dyck, in the Collection of her Royal Highness the Princess Dowager of Wales...]
A. van Dyck pinx.t. W.m Walker Sculpsit.
J. Boydell exc.t. 1766 [Published according to Act of Parliament, Feb 1st 1766 by J. Boydell Engraver, in Cheapside, London.]
Engraving, scratch letter proof before title. 475 x 605mm (18¾ x 23¾"), with large margins.
Sir Balthasar Gerbier (1592-1663/67), art agent, miniature painter, and architect, with his wife Debora Kip and their eight children (it is suggested that the girl in the centre is either a servant or a dwarf). While Gerbier's creative efforts have been disparaged (Pepys said one of his books was 'not worth a turd'), in recent years attention has turned towards Gerbier's work as keeper of the picture collection of George Villiers, marquess of Buckingham. Frederick, Prince of Wales, bought the original oil as a Van Dyck in 1749; however the Royal Collection now ascribes it to Sir Peter Paul Rubens and his studio (probably Jacob Jordaens). Gerbier and Rubens first met in the 1720s while conducting diplomatic business (it is claimed they were using Buckingham's collecting as a cover for conducting treaties between Britain and Spain). As Gerbier's family grew the painting was extended: in c.1629-30 it only featured Debora, three children and a baby; c. 1631-4 more canvas was stitched on, on which Gerbier and the two central figures were added; finally c. 1638-41 the three children on the right were apended. The timespan of the additions make most of the children look the same age. The original painting was sketched by Edward Edwards to prepare this engraving, which was published in 'The Most Capital Paintings in England', a five-volume set that was a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell.

Charles Gordon-Lennox (1791-1860) in his peer's robes, wearing his Waterloo Medal. As a soldier he served on Wellington's staff in the Peninsular War, during which time he was shot in the chest, the musket ball never being removed. At Waterloo he was ADC to the Prince of Orange until the prince was wounded, after which he replaced the wounded Sir Alexander Gordon as ADC to Wellington. As a politician he was MP for Chichester 1812 until 1819, when he entered the Lords. An ultra-Tory, he campaigned against Catholic emancipation, free trade and the repeal of the Corn Laws. The 1847 introduction of the Military General Service Medal for the survivors of the campaigns between 1793 and 1814 (French Revolutionary War and Napoleonic Wars) was primarily due to his enlistment of the support of Queen Victoria.

Drawn & Engraved by C. Turner, A.R.A.
London, Published Jan.y 16, 1840, by Mr Turner, No 50, Warren Street, Fitzroy Square.
Mezzotint, proof before title. 485 x 330mm (19 x 13"), with very large margins. Paper toned.
Three quarter portrait of Robert Liston (1794-1847), a Scottish surgeon who performed the first operation using modern anaesthesia (ether) in Europe, in 1846, after this portrait was published. During his career in Edinburgh he knocked down Robert Knox, a surgeon and client of Burke and Hare, in a row over the body of Mary Paterson. His speed was not always beneficial: in one case he took a leg in 2½ minutes, but took the patients testicles as well; in another he cut off his assistant's finger and slashed an observer's coat, after which the patient and assistant died of gangrene and the observer died of a heart attack.
