She was a long standing mistress to Charles II and had two sons by him, who were treated well. In 1835 Stephens retired, marrying George Capel-Coningsby, 5th Earl of Essex (and an octogenarian widower) in 1838. He died just over a year later; she survived him by forty-three years, with the title 'Countess of Essex'.
