A rare large image showing Ralph John Lambton (c.1767-1844), MP for Durham City, on horseback in a landscape, a pack of hounds around him. A preparatory pencil sketch by Ward of Lambton and Undertaker, dated 1802, is held by the Yale Centre for British Art. The BM has a key plate with the names of the dogs.

A seated woman in mid-16th century Flemish dress, with a lapdog (probably a Cavalier King Charles spaniel) under her right hand, used as a symbol for maritial fidelity. Although the sitter is believed by some to be Metgen Mor, wife of the Flemish painter Antonis Mor (or Antonio Moro), the Museo del Prado describes the original oil of 1565 (P002114) as merely 'Portrait of a Seated Woman'. The plate was engraved by Bartolome Vasquez for the 'Compañía para el grabado de los cuadros de los Reales Palacios', the 'Company for the engraving of the paintings from the Royal Palaces'.

'The Insubordination' commemorated by this portrait was that of the Luddites: he used spies and informers to infiltrate workers' meetings and, having sent three men to trial, sat on the jury that sentenced them to death. He then watched the hanging.
