HMS Resolution and HMS Discovery at anchor in Christmas Harbour in the Kerguelen Islands (also known as Desolation Islands) in the Southern Indian Ocean. In the foreground an unafraid penguin watches a crewman approaching to club it. A sea lion is hidden among the rocks. Engraved by James Newton after John Webber for 'A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean' (1784), the official account of Captain Cook's Third and final voyage.

A scene showing men in a small boat on the right, four of whom stand firing at a herd of walrus gathered on the ice to left, while an officer fends them off the ice with a boat-hook. Others can be seen in another small boat behind to right, with the Resolution and Discovery in the background. John Webber (1751-93) travelled with Captain Cook on the Third Voyage (1776-80) as the Official Artist of the expedition. His painting of this scene was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1784 and is now in the National Maritime Museum. Engraved by Edmund Scott and John Heath for 'A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean' (1784), the official account of Captain Cook's Third and final voyage.
