A pair of menacing polar bears approaching an upturned sledge which, being half out of the image, leaves the fate of the occupants to our imagination. In the bottom margin is a remarque of three huskies with sledge. Herbert Thomas Dicksee (1862-1942) was an English painter who specialised in paintings of dogs and animals. He studied at the Slade School of Art and his first painting was exhibited in 1881. His paintings were usually done from life; he kept numerous dogs as pets and frequented London Zoo. His daughter, Dorothy was the executor of his will, which directed her to destroy most of the plates for his etchings.
