The Chinese Ground Orchid, phaius tankervilliae, from Dr Robert John Thornton's 'Temple of Flora', considered by many to be the greatest English colour-plate flower book, and the first series of flower prints to show the plant within a habitat. The plates were issued separately between 1799 and 1807. Thornton employed a number of well-known artists; however 'Henderson' is known only for this series. The engraver, John Landseer (1769-1852) was father of the animal painter Edwin.
