A depicition of the Annunciation in the Pre-Raphaelite manner. On the reverse are labels translating the latin text and stating that the work was exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of Painter-Etchers. William Walter Burgess [1844 - 1908] annually exhibited his etchings at the Royal Academy from 1874 to 1903. Burgess was a full member of the Royal Engravers and such major museums as The British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, include his etchings in their permanent collections.

A man wearing a headress and carrying a spear, The thick pencil-sketch style is a departure from Detmold's usual realistic etchings. A young woman assisted in drying and dressing herself by two other women, after bathing in a river. The etcher Charles William Cain (1893 - 1962) travelled in the Middle East, and lived in Baghdad for some years. A student of Camberwell School of Art, he was then an illustrator and cartoonist for the Johannesburg Star. During the Great War, he served with the Border Regiment in India and Mesopotamia until the Armistice. In 1920-21, he studied at the Royal College of Art under Frank Short.

View in Baghdad, Iraq by Charles William Cain (1893-1962). Cain studied at Camberwell School of Art and worked as a graphic artist for the Johannesburg Star until World War I, when he joined the Border Regiment in India. Cain's war drawings established his reputation (the Imperial War Museum purchased thirty) and Cain studied under the etcher Frank Short at the Royal College of Art (1920-21). In the 1920s and 1930s Cain made seventy-four prints, mostly depicting scenes in Iraq, Persia, India and Burma.
