The Raglan Barracks, Devonport.
Litho: by Newman & C.º 48, Watling S.t, London. Published by W. Wood, Fore S.t Devonport [n.d., c.1855]. Tinted lithograph. Surface soiling. A view looking down on the new Raglan Barracks, designed by Belfast-born engineeer and architect Francis Fowke (1823-65), built 1853-6. Only the main gate, shown here, survives. Later, as Superintendent of Buildings for ‘Albertopolis’, the cultural complex in South Kensington, Fowke designed the Royal Albert Hall (with Major-General Henry Y. D. Scott of the Royal Engineers) and parts of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Not everything he did was met with approval: his building for the the 1862 International Exhibition was described as 'a wretched shed' by The Art Journal.
