To the Pious Memory of Dame Grace Gethin, Wife of S.r Rich.d Gethin of Gethin Grott, Ireland [...]
[n.d., c.1700.]
Very rare mezzotint. Sheet 380 x 245mm (15 x 9¾"). Trimmed within plate, creased, a little wear to edges.
The marble memorial in Westminster Abbey to Grace Gethin (née Norton, 1676-97), paid for by her parents Frances Norton, and her husband Sir George Norton. It shows Grace kneeling and holding a book between two alabaster angels who hold a gilt crown and a chaplet over her head. Above are two reclining female figures and two skulls. The coats of arms shown are for the families of Norton, Gethin, Owen and Freak. It is a virtual replica of the monument at Hollingbourne church in Kent where Grace is buried. Her mother Frances was an English religious poet and prose writer who, shocked by her daughter's early death, wrote extensively about her loss. She also published a collection of Grace's writings, 'Reliquae Gethinianae', in 1699.
