As the son of Princess Anne, William was viewed as the hope of a Protestant succession, but his death at the age of 11 (before his mother became queen), led to the Act of Settlement 1701, which settled the throne of England on Sophia, Electress of Hanover, granddaughter of James I, and her Protestant heirs.
