From a set of of seven etchings from the series ‘Suite des seize estampes représentant les Conquêtes de l' Empereur de la Chine’. Illustrating the conquests of the Qianlong Emperor (1711-99) of the Qing dynasty of China in Xinjiang Province, sometimes referred to as Chinese Turkestan or East Turkestan. Plate II: The Battle of Khurungui; Chinese troops led by Qing general Zhaohui and his lieutenants, seen watching from a rise to left, attack Amursana's supporters who, after their defeat at Khorgos, went to mount Mount Khurungui (north of the river Ili). Amursana was the eastern Mongol leader who had subdued his rival Dawaci with the military support of the Emperor Qianlong, but turned against the latter in a bid for power. The enemy encampment is attacked from all sides, most men and animals fleeing, some men firing at the Chinese. The set in the BM of which these plates form part consists of 24 prints in an album. Sixteen of the prints are reduced copies of the prints in the original set 'Conquêtes de l'Empereur de la Chine' which were engraved under the direction of Cochin. Isidor Stanislas Helman (1743 - 1806) engraved and published these reduced versions from 1783 to 1785, and they were published in 1785 in four livraisons of four plates each by Helman and Nicolas Ponce (1746 - 1831). Soon afterwards, in 1786, Helman added four further prints to the set (including the seventh plate here, Plate XVII), representing two additional subjects, one of an agricultural ceremony led by the Emperor and another (in three plates) of a procession by the Emperor in Peking. These were also published by Helman and Ponce. In 1788, Helman added a further four prints to the set, bringing the total number of engravings to 24, all of which are included in the BM album. The scenes were painted by Jesuit missionaries in China, Jean Denis Attiret (1702 - 1768), who worked with Giuseppe Castiglione (1688 - 1766), probably another of the artists, at the Court of Peking; also Ignatius Sichelbart (1708 - 1780).
