[n.d., c.1780.]
Scarce mezzotint. Plate: 205 x 270mm (8 x 10½''), with large margins. Creasing at bottom below title.
A Dutch political satire on the fortunes of England in the face of Captain John Paul Jones and the effect of the foreign policies of various European nations during the American Revolutionary Wars. England is represented by a dog, chained to a post, being beaten by men with various weapons, in the foreground (4) a Frenchman brandishes an umbrella, on the right an American (6) holds two whips, to his left a Spaniard (5) holds a spike and on the left a Dutchman (2) clips the dogs tail. To their left Catherine the Great of Russia carries a caduceas and to her right stand a man from Sweden and a man from Denmark. In the left 'the proud Queen of the Sea' is shown being lashed by American naval commander John Paul Jones (1747-1792). Following the naval Battle of Flamborough Head, fought between the British and Jones's American fleet, off the coast of Yorkshire, Jones sailed to Texel in Holland where he was hailed as a hero. The battle proved a major embarrassment for the Royal Navy and cemented Jones' place in American naval history.
