[An albino negress.]
De Seve del. 1777. C.Guttenberg sc.
[n.d., c.1780.]
Engraving. 225 x 170mm (8¾ x 6¾"), large margins on 3 sides.
An albino negress, standing naked in front of a European cabinet, exotic fruits and African artifacts to the left. From Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle'. Albino Africans were often put on display in the 18th century, amid speculation that they were a separate species. In 1758 the botanist Carl Linnaeus tried to purchase a teenage girl in London as a scientific specimen, believing her to be a troglodyte. The 'owner' refused, expecting to make more money exhibiting her.
