Painted by J. Mc.Lure Hamilton. Engraved by Cha.s J. Tomkins.

Mixed method engraving. 610 x 440mm (24 x 17¼"), with extremely large margins.
At first the scene appears to be of a man playing with his terrier, as it sits on a laboratory bench sits up begging. He divided his time between Philadelphia and London, where he was official portrait painter to Prime Minister William Gladstone. This engraving, subtitled 'The Last Appeal', was exhibited at the R.A. in 1884; both the 'Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society' and the 'National Canine Defence League' used the image in their campaigns in the early 20th century.
