The Address to George 2.nd on Death of Fredrick Prince of Wales [ink mss]. His Majesty's most Gracious Answer.

Ministers tell a throne seated George II (1683–1760) of the death of his son Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707–1751). In the past his death has been attributed to a burst lung abscess caused by a blow from a cricket or a real tennis ball, but it is now thought to have been from a pulmonary embolism.

[Thomas Dudley after Francis Barlow, 1678/9]
Etching, platemark approx. 240 x 165mm (9½ x 6½").
One of thirty-two illustrations to the second (1687) edition of Francis Barlow's Aesop, showing scenes from the life of the Greek storyteller. All of the plates were designed by Barlow but only five were etched by him. The rest, including this one, were etched by Thomas Dudley (1678-9, fl.). Little is known of Dudley- he signed himself as a student of Wenceslaus Hollar in one print and while he etched some portraits, his prints after Barlow are his most important work. In 1679 he went to Lisbon, where he is known to have made further prints, and he is not supposed to have returned to England thereafter.

R. de Hooghe del et sc. 1672 [and similar, murder scenes only]
Four etched and engraved sheets, dimensions 150 x 115mm (6 x 4½") to 315 x 200mm (12½ x 8"). All trimmed and tipped into album sheets.
The murders of the De Witt brothers, Cornelis (1623-72) and Jan (1625-72), shown in four panels (originally printed on one sheet). Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. Jan de Witt opposed the appointment of William of Orange as stadtholder, and after the French invasion of the United Provinces in 1672 the people called for William and demonstrated against Jan. That same year Cornelis de Witt was suspected of treason and condemned to exile for life. As a result Jan resigned his position as councillor pensionary, but when he visited Cornelis in prison in the Hague, a mob gathered, dragged both brothers outside, and murdered them (as shown here). Offered with description of the events and double portrait of the brothers (probably not by de Hooghe).

A Paris chez Decrouan Editeur, Rue de Rempart, 4, vis-a-vis le Theatre Francais [n.d., c.1850].
Engraving. 630 x 830mm. Tatty extremities, some foxing.
France's violent transition from the ancien regime that had nurtured tennis (le jeu de paume) to the anti-aristocratic revolution began with the takeover of a tennis court. In June 1789, following a month-long deadlock in the States-General over constitutional reform at the royal palace of Versailles, the frustrated Third Estate (the commons), which had been locked out from the formal meeting place by King Louis XVI, declared itself a National Assembly, took over a royal tennis court, and on June 20th took an oath (serment) not to disperse till their demands were met. Three weeks later, on July 14th, a Paris mob attacked the Bastille prison. A nineteenth century impression of the plate first published by Nicolas Ponce in 1792.

Series of French Revolutionary subjects, which while bearing English text and London publication dates were probably produced in Italy (Giacomo Aliprandi, for instance, is not known to have worked in England). Aliprandi's prints were copied after stipples by artists such as Bartolozzi, and presented as published in England (with the names of imaginary French artists in some cases) to capitalize on the vogue for English prints. Once in the collection of Reverend J. Burleigh James of Knowbury Park, Shropshire. An important collector of prints of all schools and periods, James' collection of prints by Rembrandt and Dürer was particularly notable.

Saint Gregory I the Great or Pope Saint Gregory I (c. 540 – 604) was pope from September 3, 590 until his death. This illustrates the circumstances of his famous quote 'Non Angli, sed Angeli' ('They are not Angles, but Angels') when he first encountered blue-eyed, blond-haired English boys at a slave market. The incident is said by Bede to have led to his dispatching of St. Augustine of Canterbury to England to convert the English. A fantastic example of colour printing.

Among the allied plenipotentiaries at the signing of the preliminaries were Colonel Charles Whitworth and his colleague William Fawkener, Count Goltze (Prussia) and Count Osterman (Russia), but the figures are elegant puppets and can in no way be considered as portraits.''
