A caricature portrait of Prince Pyotr Borisovich Kozlovsky (1783-1840) riding a fine horse, his obesity forcing him to lean backwards. The title is a nickname, which Kozlovsky used himself. A Russian diplomat and a man of letters, Kozlovsky visited London in 1812-3, when his girth was caricatured in George Cruikshank's 'Longitude and Latitude of St. Petersburgh'. Lord Byron planned to accompany him back to Italy in 1813 but didn't.

A French dramatist and writer, Mercier was highly critical of earlier art, especially writers including Rancine and Boileau. He was a member of the National Convention who was imprisoned during the Reign of Terror, only surviving because of the fall of Robiespierre.

On the left is a portrait of the actress Sarah Maria Wilson, formerly Mrs Weston (neé Adcock) who was the daughter of the actor William Adcock. Following the breakdown of her second marriage to a Mr Wilson, Mrs Wilson 'developed a notoriety for high living made possible by the liberalty of her lover Lord Hinchingbroke'. From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility.

A potato-headed figure with a globe for a body evidently prepared for all weathers. A satire on Patrick Murphy (1782 - 1847), weather prophet. His name was very prominent in 1838 as the author of ‘The Weather Almanack (on Scientific Principles, showing the State of the Weather for every Day of the Year 1838). By P. Murphy, Esq., M.N.S'. Under the date of 20 January he said ‘Fair, prob. lowest deg. of winter temp.' By a happy chance this proved to be a remarkably cold day, the thermometer at sunrise standing at four degrees below zero. This circumstance raised his celebrity to a great height as a weather prophet, and the shop of his publishers, Messrs. Whittaker & Co., was besieged with customers, while the winter of 1837-8 became known as Murphy's winter. The 1838 almanac ran to forty-five editions, and the prophet made 3,000l., which he almost immediately lost in an unsuccessful speculation in corn. There was nothing very remarkable about the prediction, as the coldest day generally falls about 20 Jan. In the predictions throughout the year the forecasts were partly right on 168 days and decidedly wrong on 197 days. A popular song of the day, a parody on ‘Lesbia has a beaming eye,' commenced ‘Murphy has a weather eye.' The almanack was afterwards occasionally published, but its sale very much fell off after the ‘nine days' wonder' was past, and ultimately it had a very limited circulation. Murphy, however, persevered in his pursuit, and was about bringing out an almanac for 1848, when he died at his lodgings, 108 Dorset Street, St. Bride's, London, in 1847, aged 65.

Two bust portraits in ovals of naval officer and M.P. for Bridgnorth, Hugh Pigot (1722-1792) who served in Canada and his mistress Mrs Wentworth with whom Pigot had sent up a country villa. From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility.

[Christopher Pinchbeck the younger] Pinchee, or the Bauble Macaroni.

Christopher Pinchbeck the younger (1709/10 - 1783), clockmaker and inventor, son of the clockmaker of the same name, holding in his right hand a conical vessel. This must be one of his inventions, perhaps his celebrated candlesnuffers. He is described in his patents as ‘toyman and mechanician'. As an anti-Wilkite he was mocked in 'The London Evening Post' in November 1772, which forecast the possible election as President of the Royal Society of ‘no less a person than the noted Pinchbeck, buckle and knickknack maker to the King'. Trades interest. From 'Caricatures, Macaronies & Characters, published by MDarly', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V5' upper left and '24' upper right.
