Henry Brougham (1778-1868), stands outside a Registry Office looking at a notice board of menial jobs. In the background a streetseller holds a placard, 'Hall of Information, Strand.' In November 1834 Brougham enraged the King by taking the Great Seal across the Scottish border and indulged in uncharacteristic extravagances. Dismissed and desperate to return to power, he offered to become a judge without any pay beyond his ex-Lord Chancellor's pension.

Originally published in 1823, this example was published the following year, with McLean's imprint and the 'Mr Alder' added.

A caricature portrait of General Arabin (1750-1828) in uniform with epaulettes, sword, and gorget and a spotted foulard or nightcap on his head. His head is turned, showing a Jewish profile and broad ogling grin. The BM records that Arabin was 'in Angelo's opinion the best amateur actor in the Pic Nics (see BMSat 9916, &c), and outstanding in anecdote, song, and imitation'.

This is said to be an unkind caricature of Miss Sarah Sophia Banks (1744-1818), sister of Sir Joseph Banks the naturalist. If so she wears one of her three riding habits, which she called 'hitem, titem, and scrub', as she enters an inn with her entourage. Sir Joseph donated her collection of prints and coins to the British Museum.

Two portrait busts set in ovals. On the right is a portrait of Richard Barry, 7th Earl of Barrymore (1769-1793) an English nobleman, theatrical enthusiast and rake. Known as Hellgate and Rake of Rakes. The portrait on the left depicts Antonietta, a French dancer Barry brought over from Paris to advise on his theatricals at his house at Wargrave. From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility.

William Henry Cavendish Bentinck as a statue sitting in a chair of Portland Stone blocks, a placard: 'Repaird and Whitewash'd in the Year 1807'. On seeing the statue John Bull exclaims 'I really thought this Statue was gone to decay a long time ago!!'. By the time of this caricature Portland, deaf, gouty, and infirm, was a mere figure-head. This example has Portland coloured as a man rather than the intended statue.

By New Zealand born artist, Sir David Low (1891 - 1963). Unhappy with the political leadership of the British establishment David Low created his cartoon character, Colonel Blimp in 1934.

A half-length satirical portrait in oval of Edmund Bonner (c. 1500-1569), Bishop of London 1539-49 and 1553-59, raising a willow switch above his head. This image is a detail from a scene of him punishing a heretic from 'Foxe's Book of Martyrs' (1563). Bonner originally supported Henry VIII's schism from Rome but, in the reign of Edward VI, opposed the king's role as head of the Church, for which he was removed from office and imprisoned in the Marshalsea, a prison in Southwark. He was restored by Mary I and began persecuting Protestants, earning the nickname 'Bloody Bonner'. Elizabeth sent him back to the Marshalsea in 1560, where he remained until he died.
Not recorded in Clayton, perhaps a connection to James Gillray.

Satire portrait of Sir John Bowing published in volume 4 of 'Fraser's Magazine'. As well as being the 4th governor of Hong Kong, he is regarded as being one the world's greatest hyperpolyglots: he claimed he knew 200 languages and could speak 100. He published works on the poetry of Russia, Poland, Spain, Serbia, Hungary, as well as descriptions of Batavia, Siam and the Philippines. Here he is satirised as the Hawaiian Tydus-pooh-pooh, who is described in the text (on-line) as 'the undisputed monarch of Owyheian literature', but depicted with his compatriots snoozing behind.

Two portraits in ovals, on the right Edmund Boyle, 7th Earl of Cork (1742-1798) and on the left a Miss Greenhill. Following the breakdown of his marriage in 1773 to Anne Courtenay whom he married in 1764, Boyle struck an arrangement with a courtesan named Miss Greenhill. In an attempt to divorce his wife Boyle accused her of intimacy with a musician however, this was not successful. The marriage was finally dissolved in 1782. From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility.

Dr Robert Bragge, art dealer, connoisseur and auctioneer. who held numerous auctions through the 1740s and 1750s in London, in a long cloak, leaning on a stick; he wears spectacles. From '24 Caricatures by several ladies, gentlemen, artists, etc.', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V.1' upper left and '21' upper right.

Portrait of Robert Bragge, a famed London art dealer and connoisseur who held numerous auctions during the 1740s and 1750s. Etched by Arthur Pond after Pier Leone Ghezzi (1675-1755), regarded as the first professional caricaturist. Based in Rome, Ghezzi moved freely amongst the Italian nobility, even associating with Pope Clement XI. His satirical portraits include one of Vivaldi and several British grand tourists. Arthur Pond (1701-58), painter, engraver, print-seller, dealer and collector. For an example of M. Darly's cariacture of Robert Bragge see our ref: 14138.

Caricature of Sir William Browne (1692-1774), physician. Browne was known for his eccentricities (he was also caricatured by Samuel Foote in 'The Devil on Two Sticks') but nonetheless became president of the College of Physicians in 1765-6 and earned a fortune. Etched by Thomas Orde-Powlett (1746-1807), politician also known for his etched caricatures (mostly of Cambridge celebrities) which were published by his drawing-master, the well-known printmaker James Bretherton.

He is dressed in petticoat breeches, a doublet with a ruff at the neck, and a cloak draped over his shoulders. A broad-brimmed hat rests on his head. Behind him, a harlequin peeks out from behind a curtain, while a chest sits at his feet. The rim of the plate is adorned with playing card motifs.

From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility.

Burgoyne was a politician and playwright, notable for his service in the Seven Years War and American Revolutionary War. The surrender of his army in 1777 at Saragota was a turning point in the war.
