Engraving. Sheet: 360 x480mm (14 x 19"). Label printed on tissue paper, laid on reverse of print. Engraving trimmed within plate and title area. Creasing. General paper tone. Messy.
The intrigues of Agrippa to displace Nero and to elevate Britannicus, the son of Claudius, led to Nero's first domestic tragedy—the poisoning of Britannicus. The painting hangs at Windsor Castle with the title Caligula depositing the ashes of his mother and brother in the tomb of his ancestors. "The Most Capital Paintings in England" series of engravings in five volumes, late 1760s-1786, the first three (1769 to 1773) originally published under the title .Sculptura Britannica. These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell who promoted the interests of both artists, engravers and Patrons establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints. On verso for Alexander Beugo (1801-1827), print publisher and seller. For a portrait of Beugo, see item ref: 33957.

B. West R.A. inv. 1791. F. Bartolozzi R.A. etched.
London Publish'd May 1791. by Mr. Sandby Jun.r St. Georges Row.
Etching and engraving, very scarce and fine. Plate 241 x 165mm. 9½ x 6". Crease to bottom right-hand corner, small margins, overall foxing.
Trade card for Thomas Sandby, depicting the daughter of Dibutades embracing her lover and outlining his shadow on the wall, while he holds a lamp on the left. Thomas Sandby (1721-1798) was a self-taught draftsman who, with his brother Paul took up positions in the military drawing department at the Tower of London. Thomas was sent first to the Battle of Dettingen and then to Culloden as draughtsman to the Duke of Cumberland. In 1747, under the Duke, he was appointed Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park to which he devoted considerable energy in improvements. He was also involved in the London art world and with his brother he was one of the founder members of the Royal Academy in 1768. He was elected their first professor of architecture and later architect of the King's works. In reality, he built few buildings and was more respected for his architectural theory.

[BOOKSELLER] I. Royle Stationer, Bookseller and Book Binder,
[BOOKSELLER] I. Royle Stationer, Bookseller and Book Binder, 62 Deansgate Nearly Opposite Brazen Nose St. Manchester.
Pigot sc.
[Manchester, c.1815.]
Illustrated engraved label/trade card of J. Royle, bookseller; winged putto displaying lettered shield with beehive and book cabinet behind, printed in blue ink on paper, 65 x 80mm. 2½ x 3¼". Time stained on its extremities old album backing still attached.
An interesting adaptation of item 16911: Manchester stationer John Royle evidently split from his business partner and moved into the adjacent premises on Deansgate. The plate has been altered accordingly. Bees feature on the Manchester coat of arms and were adopted in the 19th century as a symbol of industry - Manchester being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
