A South View of the New Custom House.
A South View of the New Custom House. Reduced from a Drawing by D. Laing, Esq.r the Architect.
J.C. Stadler Sculp.t.
London. Published April 1st 1817 at R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 101 Strand.
Aquatint, printed in colours and hand finished. 395 x 505mm, 15½ x 19¾. Unexamined out of frame.
David Laing (1774-1856) built the New Custom House in 1817 publishing a book chronicling his problems with the foundations the next year. Subsidence caused the building to collapse in 1825, causing the ruin of Laing's business. The view is from a series of eighteen 'Views of London' published by Ackermann between 1811 and 1822, engraved mostly from paintings by John Gendall and Thomas Shepherd; it is likely that one of these artists sketched Laing's drawing for engraving.
