The Dome House, which Sir Richard Hotham built shortly before his death in 1799 in the hope of attracting King George III to stay there. The King did not stay, but in 1808 his granddaughter the young Princess Charlotte stayed and remained for two years, supporting with her money and patronage the Jubilee School for poor children, founded in 1810.

Sir William Phelip (1383 - 1441) of Dennington, Suffolk, and Erpingham, Norfolk. He served at Agincourt, was captain of Harfleur 1421 - 1422, treasurer of the household to Henry V, and chamberlain to Henry VI, and on 13 Nov. 1437 was created Baron Bardolf. On his death in 1441 the peerage became extinct. Rare.

In 1843 Charles Robert Leslie published his 'Memoirs of John Constable Esq. R.A'. He obtained directly from the Constable family 186 sets of 22 images of the Various Subjects of Landscape in return for 30 copies of his book. Among his works are St Luke's Chapel in Brompton Hospital and alterations to Hughenden Manor for Benjamin Disraeli.

A fine watercolour view of Ridley House, Felixtowe. In the early 1840's Sir Robert and Lady Harland acquired a Georgian farmhouse by the sea at Old Felixstowe. It was then largely rebuilt in the Italianate style in 1843 by Sir Robert. Twenty years later it was bought by Lady Login who occasionally let it to friends for short periods. The most interesting of these was a short let to Edward Fitzgerald the poet who lived in nearby Woodbridge. The high level of skill and accuracy of the painting would suggest that it was made by an architect.

A fine watercolour view of Felixstowe, between the River Orwell and River Deben on the North Sea coast of Suffolk, England. Steam and sailing vessels can be seen on the water in the background to the right, as well as figures beside beach huts by the water below. A large row of houses with verendas facing the sea, are in the centre of the image. According to the annotation below the image, these houses were destroyed in a fire, the same year that this painting was made. The high level of skill and accuracy of the painting would suggest that it was made by an architect.

'Stanford Float exhibits two lights upon a yard athwart ships which appear steady or in motion, according to the state of the weather. The lights are visible at a distance of two or three leagues, according to the clearness of the atmosphere. They serve as a direction for the Stanford Channel. In the day, a flag is hoisted at the mast-head; and during foggy weather and snow-showers, a bell is tolled night and day' ('The British Pharos' by Alan Stevenson, 1831).

A fishing ketch in Lowestoft Harbour. Frank H. Mason (1876 - 1965) was a cadet on HMS Conway. Having served in the Royal Navy in the First World War, Mason became a war artist, with several such images held at the Imperial War Museum. Between the wars he became a full-time artist, working as an illustrator, a poster artist for railway companies, and supplying posters and postcards for shipping companies. From 1900 onwards he exhibited at the RA, and was awarded R.I. in 1929. Mason illustrated the book North Sea Fishers and Fighters in 1911, and was a 'significant artist of marine and coastal scenes, as well as an illustrator of shipping books'.

Lowestoft Harbour, Suffolk. The original inner harbour was built by the Lowestoft and Norwich Navigation Company and was constructed in 1837. The development of the harbour led to a rapid growth in the fishing industry and associated engineering and ship building companies such as Brooke Marine, Richard and Boulton and Paul. Large scale ship building, which included the building of vessels for the Royal Navy, continued into the 1980s.

Thomas Clarkson penned the original Autograph, (of which the above is a perfect facsimile, obtained by the Anastatic Press) in ink pre-pared for the purpose; about 4 weeks before his death, which took place on the 26th of the 9th month, 1846, in his 87th year. The windows immediately opposite the gate are these of his usual sitting room, the two above them of that where he ended his mortal career. WDS.

A view of Playford Hall, Suffolk, with abolitionist Thomas Clarkson (1760 - 1846), walking towards the gates. Clarkson was founding member of The Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade (also known as the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade) and helped achieve passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which ended British trade in slaves. Clarkson rented Playford Hall in around 1813 and lived there until his death in 1846.

From about 1829 Constable and Lucas worked together on a series of mezzotints after sketches and paintings by Constable called 'Various Subjects of Landscape...' published in parts between 1830 and 1832. In 1843 Charles Robert Leslie published his 'Memoirs of John Constable Esq. R.A'. He obtained directly from the Constable family 186 sets of 22 images of the Various Subjects of Landscape in return for 30 copies of his book. This mezzotint is one of those; "see Tate John Constable, David Lucas".

A fine watercolour showing Highlands House, in the village of East Bergholt in the Babergh District of Suffolk, England, just north of the Essex border. The house is sitiuated within large grounds, in which two archery targets can be seen on either side. East Bergholt is the birthplace of painter John Constable (1776 - 1837). The high level of skill and accuracy of the painting would suggest that it was made by an architect.

A fine watercolour depicting the River Orwell, with a steam boat travelling on the right and a sailing vessel in the centre. Woolverstone Hall can be seen in the middle gound. The house was built in 1776 for William Berners, a property developer from London who had gradually been acquiring extensive land­holdings on the Shotley peninsula. The back of the house overlooks the River Orwell at a picturesque curve and from the sides of the house there are views both down and upstream towards Ipswich. The high level of skill and accuracy of the painting would suggest that it was made by an architect.
