The Absent Minded Beggar by Rudyard Kipling.
The Absent Minded Beggar by Rudyard Kipling.
Eyre & Spottiswode Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majest.
Copyright in England and the United States by the Daily Mail Publishing Co., 1899.
Leaflet, folded twice as issued, with two half-tones and facsimile handwriting. Total 320 x 610mm (12½ x 24".
The lyric sheet for a poem written by Rudyard Kipling in support of a fund for the families of soldiers fighting in the Boer War. The 'absent-minded beggars' were the Army Reserve soldiers who went off to do their patriotic duties forgetting to provide for their wives and children. Soon afterwards Richard Caton Woodville supplied an illustration, 'A Gentleman in Kharki', showing a wounded but defiant British Tommy in battle (included in this leaflet) and Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert & Sullivan fame) set the poem to music. Although Kipling later wrote that it 'lacked poetry' and became 'wedded... to a tune guaranteed to pull teeth out of barrel-organs', his poem helped the fund raise £340,000. The fund was started by the new Daily Mail and was such a success that the newspaper soon selling a million copies a day, the highest circulation in the world.

2 letterpress sheets. Plate: 270 x 450mm (10½ x 17¾"). Central crease as issued, slight staining.
Two poems published in 1806. The first is a poem by James Pye (1745-1813), published to celebrate the birthday of Queen Charlotte in 1806. James Pye, who had served as M.P. for Berkshire between 1784 and 1790, had supported Pitt the Younger and has been said that it was through this alliance that Pye was elected Poet Laureate in 1790, a post he held until his death in 1813. Each year on both the King and Queen's birthday Pye would publish a strongly patriotic ode in celebration. Surrounding the text, flags of various nations are illustrated including America with 13 stars. The second poem was written to commemorate the funeral of Lord Nelson in St Pauls. A plate from 'Orme's Graphic History of the Life, Exploits, and Death of Horation Nelson', published only three days after the funeral.

Official Programme of the Return of the C.I.V. The March through London.
Official Programme of the Return of the C.I.V. The March through London.
[London, 1900.]
Wood engraving on crepe paper, border printed in colours. Sheet 390 x 390mm (15¼ x 15¼"). Floral border with damage, foxed.
The return of the City Imperial Volunteers from the 2nd Boer War. The CIV were raised by the Lord Mayor in December 1899 specifically for the war, paid for by the City Livery Companies, bankers and City and West End firms. The recruits, who enlisted for one year, were granted the Freedom of the City of London before embarking for South Africa in January 1900. Their greatest success was at the Battle of Doornkop on 26th May 1900. Whereas the Gordon Highlanders used the traditional march uphill in line, making easy pickings for the entrenched Boers, the amateur C.I.V. used short bursts, with leap-frogging groups providing covering fire, thus minimising casualties and succesfully driving the Boers out. They returned home in October 1900 and made a state entry into the City on the 29th. Huge crowds turned out: the Central Line, which had been in operation for only a few weeks, alone carried 250,000 passengers.

The Colosseum was built by Decimus Burton to house a panorama of London painted by Thomas Horner (1785-1844), sketched from a specially constructed hut on top of the dome of St Paul's during building work. Financial problems forced the Pantheon to open before Horner had finished the painting: both the financial backer and Horner then disappeared.

A very rare souvenir handkerchief commemorating the visit of Manuel II, last king of Portugal, to London. It had been Manuel's father's hope to marry him to a British princess in order to win a strong ally, but King Carlos's assassination the previous year and the ensuing political instability dashed this plan. Manuel was appointed Knight of the Order of the Garter during this visit, but the support of Britain could not save his throne from the revolution of the following year. He escaped to England via Gibraltar, living in Fulwell Park, Twickenham until his death in 1932.
