Profile portraits of three plotters who tried to blow up Russian & Danish ships frozen at anchor in Copenhagen harbour during the Russo-Swedish War in 1789. Lars Benzelstierna (1759-1808), conspiring with an Irish innkeeper called Shields, purchased a cutter from another Irishman, a captain called O'Brien, using money provided by Sweden king Gustaf III. He planned to fill it with explosives and move it among the Russian ships, invite Russian officers aboard and blow them up. However O'Brien mentioned the plot to an Englishman, who had him arrested. Benzelstierna hid in the Swedish embassy but eventually gave himself up and was sentenced to death by beheading, the ladder and wheel. However the sentence was commuted on appeal; he was pardoned in 1796 when the political situation between Sweden and Denmark changed.

Christian VII (1749-1808) was King of Denmark and Norway, and Duke of Schleswig and Holstein from 1766 until his death. He was dreadful towards his wife, Princess Caroline Mathilda, a sister of King George III of Great Britain, declaring that it was not fashionable to loves one's wife, and thus he pursued a young courtisan, Stovlet-Cathrine. His neglected wife drifted into an affair with Johann Friedrich Struensee, the royal physician. Following a divorce, Struensee was arrested and later executed; the warrant was signed by Christian with indifference. He suffered from various mental problems, the symptoms of which leaned towards paranoia and schizophrenia.
See 17597 for Christian VII's wife Caroline Matilda; and 17598 for Juliana Maria, who saw Christian VII restored to the throne.

Caroline Matilda, Queen of Denmark (1751-1775). The youngest child of Frederick, Prince of Wales, she married her cousin, Christian VII of Denmark, at the age of fifteen. After the birth of their first child, produced for the sake of the succession, Christian turned his attentions to a young courtesan, leaving Caroline unhappy and lonely. By 1770 she had taken Johann Friedrich Struensee, the new royal physician, as a lover, and as the king's health declined, their influence increased. However, in 1772, both were arrested, Struensee was executed soon after, and the marriage of Caroline and Christian was dissolved by divorce. She was deported on board a British Frigate and resided in Celle Castle (in Hanover, the territory of her brother, George III). her brother's territory of Hanover. She hoped to return to Denmark, but died suddenly of scarlet fever in 1775 at the age of 23.
