Ernest Gambart, an agent of the French print publisher Goupil, quickly launched himself on his own as a print publisher and seller and established the French Gallery in the mid-1850s at 120/121 Pall Mall as a full-time space devoted to the exhibition and sale of contemporary art. It was one of the first and most successful commercial galleries of contemporary art in London, and its emergence paralleled a larger transformation of the art market. Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) was a Scottish portrait painter. Here this illustrated catalogue includes a foreword by James Grieg and press notices of the collection of pictures on view at the French Gallery

Jacob Burckhardt's penetrating essay conveys a vision of the background against which Ruben's works were produced, and gives revealing explanations of the paintings and their style, and a highly interesting sketch of the painter's life as well. Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a Flemish Baroque painter, and a proponent of the extravagant Baroque style that highlighted the late 16th and early 17th centuries. As a diplomat he was knighted by both Philip IV, King of Spain, and Charles I, King of England.
