Marion Rhodes, English artist. (1907 - 1998). Rhodes studied at Huddersfield School of Art, Leeds School of Art (1925-1929) and the Central School of Art and Design, London (1934-39). She taught art before moving to London. Rhodes went on to teach in the city and in the south of England for most of her life though she exhibited her etchings and drawings at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Paris Salon.

A view of Dilston Hall, at Dilston, near Corbridge, Northumberland, at one time the seat of James Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater, with three columns of text lamenting his death. Radclyffe, grandson of Charles II and Moll Davis, began the construction of a grand mansion to replace the old Hall, but the works was never completed as he was beheaded for his part in the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion. Dilston Hall came into the hand of the Fofeit Estates Commission. After a corrupt sale was annulled in 1731, the Greenwich Hospital Act 1735 directed that the estate's income should be used to complete the construction of Greenwich Hospital. The Greenwich Commissioners ordered its demolition in 1765 (the year before the publication of this plate), leaving standing only the castle tower and the chapel: the castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building.

The ruined priory on Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, Northumberland. It was founded c.635 with the backing of the King of Northumbria at nearby Bamburgh Castle but, after constant viking raids, was abandoned in 875 in favour of Durham. It was re-established in 1093 as a Benedictine house and continued until its suppression in 1536 under Henry VII. It is now an English Heritage property Harry George Webb (1882-1914) was a landscape and architectural painter and etcher, who exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Etchers. He set up the Caradoc Press in Chiswick in 1899 with his wife Hesba.

Thomas Miles Richardson, (1784-1848) Having revealed a deep love of drawing he didn't follow this passion until after his fathers death when he accepted a position as Drawing Master at a Newcastle school. In 1813, after six years as both master of St Andrew's and a private drawing master, he resigned his school position to devote his life to painting. Initially his work attracted little local interest, and he found it difficult to make a living as an artist. However, from 1814, he began to gain a wide reputation as a result of his exhibiting works in London, at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. In 1831, he also helped to launch the Northern Society of Painters in Water-Colours. A leading exhibiting member of these organisations, he made a particularly notable contribution to the Northern Academy in 1830 with four large paintings. Moot Hall, the Castle Keep, the neo-Gothic spire of St. Nicholas' church ar all visible in this view. Gateshead was a prosperous settlement in the Roman Times, and during the Industrial Revolution and Victorian Era it became one of the focal points for industries in the North East due to its easily accessible port.

A view of GreyFriars, founded 1237, bought by a merchant Robert Anderson after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It was here that Charles I was held after he surrendered to the Scots Army in 1646, before being handed to Parliament. This view shows the building when owned by Newcastle builder George Anderson (between 1782 and his death in 1798), who converted it into three residences. In 1835 it was demolished by another Newcastle builder, Richard Grainger, during the construction of Grey Street. Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

A view of the remarkable suspension bridge over the River Tweed between Horncliffe in Northumberland and Fishwick, Berwickshire, with an angler in the foreground. When it opened it was the longest wrought iron suspension bridge in the world; it is now the oldest suspension bridge still carrying road traffic. Captain Samuel Brown (1776-1852) championed the Royal Navy's use of chain link cables to replace unreliable hemp ropes in rigging. Leaving the navy he set up a chain-making company which provided the navy with chain until 1916. He also provided chain for Brunel's SS Great Eastern: the famous photograph of Brunel by Robert Howlett includes these chains. In 1817 he took out a patent titled the 'Construction of a Bridge by the Formation and Uniting of its Component Parts'. In 1819 he started building this bridge, with the help of John Rennie on the masonry, finishing in less than a year. In 1823 he built the Chain Pier in Brighton. In 1838 Brown was knighted by Queen Victoria. An unusual example, not finished with hand colour as expected.
