Portrait of Gregorio Carafa (1615 - 1690), 62nd Prince and Grand Master of the Order of Saint John (Knights of Malta) 1680 until his death in 1690. The sea battle underneath the portrait probably represents the Third Battle of the Dardanelles, in which the Venetian fleet, aided by seven Maltese galleys commanded by Carafa, gave the Ottomans their worst naval defeat since the Battle of Lepanto. As Grand Master he ordered the strengthening of Fort St. Angelo. From Alain Manesson Mallet's 'Description de L'Univers'.

from a Daguerrotype. Hullmandel & Walton, Lith.
Lithograph on india paper, printed area 170 x 100mm. Glues stains in margins.
Provenance: Bracebridge Archive. Selina Bracebridge, maiden-name Mills, was a pupil of Samuel Prout. Her husband was the Bracebridge celebrated in Washington Irving’s Bracebridge Hall. From the mid-1830s, they settled for some years in Athens. He owned large properties in Karea and Euboca, the latter of which he sold to the Noel family; and they both lived in a large house on Adrianou Street. 1850, saw the publication of Mr. Bracebridge’s 'Letter on the Affairs of Greece'. Bracebridge was Florence Nightingale’s uncle. Their time spent in Athens and the Levant is not clear; however it seems likely that they were settled in Athens from about 1835 to 1839, with frequent trips to England. Similarly, it is most likely that on their return back to the UK, they continued to own property in Greece. A painting by Selina is in the possession of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

A steam tug towing a tall-ship into the Grand Harbour, Valetta, Malta. William L. Wyllie (1851-1931) was born on July 5th 1851, in London. He attended Heatherley’s art school until the age of fifteen, leaving to study at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Turner Medal at the age of eighteen. In the early 1870’s Wyllie became an illustrator for the Graphic and also held several exhibitions at the galleries of the Fine Art Society. In 1889 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited his work in 1901. Wyllie spent much of his time at sea working for the White Star Shipping Line. His etchings and watercolours showing working life on the Thames and the Medway brought him widespread popularity. Later in his life he played an important role in the restoration of the Victory.
