A view of St Botolph's Church, which boasts one of the tallest Medieval towers in the country. William Stennett, a merchant and antiquary, made many drawings of English buildings, many of which were engraved by George Vertue of the Society of Antiquaries. It is likely that this print is a re-issue of one of these.

A view from the south-west of the ruined west front and nave of the Medieval Abbey Church. Three figures climb over a wall in the left foreground. A short history of the abbey is inscribed below the print.

A view of Trinity Bridge, the unique three-legged footbridge built c. 1390 over the river Welland and a tributary. Both rivers are now diverted, leaving the bridge high and dry. It was drawn by Jonathan Sisson from a sketch by antiquarian William Stukley and published in the 'Itinerarium curiosum'.

Culverthorpe Hall, the grade II listed estate, farm, park and lake in Lincolnshire. It was constructed in 1679 with later additions. From "A Collection of One Hundred Views In England and Wales". John Boydell's 'Collection of Views' was made after he turned from engraver to print publisher in 1767. The first collection was issued in 1770, and included some plates by printmakers other than himself.

Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire, soon after the mineral spring was discovered there. The Lord of the Manor, Thomas Hotchkin, spent a great deal of money building the Victoria Hotel and the Spa Baths shown here. The hotel burnt down in 1920 while the Spa Baths closed when the well collapsed in 1983. Also shown in the print is the church and the Great Northern Railway running nearby. No doubt this print was made to publicise the new developments in Woodhall.

A view of Louth, Lincolnshire, with workers harvesting hay in the fireground and a windmill on the far horizon. Thomas Espin (1767-1822) was an amateur artist who ran a 'Mathematical, Architectural, Nautical and Commercial Academy' in Louth. This plate was first published by the engraver, Bartholomew Howlett, in London, 1793; this example was issued by local Louth publisher John Jackson who operated until at least 1811. See BM 1870,0514.2877 for earlier version.

Plate from John Hassell's 'Aqua Pictura. Illustrated by a series of original specimens from the works of...all the most approved modern water coloured draftsmen...' (1813). This volume was an ambitious project containing fifteen plates, each in four states, to illustrate the development of a watercolour from initial drawing to completed work. This print, finished with hand-colouring, replicates the original watercolour by Thomas Girtin. Girtin had died several years previously, but had drawn Tattershall Castle as the basis for an engraving in a series of views in Lincoln, in 1799. The engraver and publisher John Hassell (1767-1825) was also a drawing master, and like several other of his books, 'Aqua Pictura' was designed for educational purposes. Abbey Life 140.10

Thornton Abbey was founded as a priory in 1139 close to the small North Lincolnshire village of Thornton Curtis by William le Gros, the Earl of Yorkshire, and raised to the status of Abbey in 1148. It was a house for Augustinian or black canons. The Abbey's enormous and ornate fortified gatehouse is the largest and amongst the finest in England.
