The portrait frontispiece to the sitter's 'Prose e rime del Signor Francesco D'Ageno'; engraved by Bartolozzi from a sketch by Richard Cosway of Gainsborough's portrait in the collection of Grolamo Tonioli. Bartolozzi erased Cosway's name in the published state after Gainsborough remonstrated.

Set of engravings by Luca and Antonio Basoli, who were amongst the few artists active in Bologna after Napoleonic legislation in the 19th century led to stagnation of art practice in the city. They are presented for publication in a folder celebrating the anniversary of the Bolognese business Laboratorio Zarri in 1939. The prints were issued in an edition of 500, of which this set is numbered 89.

Cesare Borgia, duke of Valentinois (c.1475-1507), condottiere frequently cited in Machiavelli's 'The Prince'. The son of Rodrigo Borgia (the future Pope Alexander VI), Cesare was created Cardinal in 1493, and resigned in 1498, the same year he was made duke of Valentinois. The following year he married a Frenchwoman, Charlotte d'Albret, and accompanied Louis XII in his Italian campaign and entered Milan (1499). Over the following years Cesare led French troops, but following the death of his father he was arrested and his estate dismantled while he was exiled to Spain in 1504. He escaped, but was killed during the siege of Viana in 1507.

Carlo III (1486-1553), duke of Savoy, often called 'il Buono' ('the good'). Carlo was a younger son of of Filippo II (see ref. 41068), who having spent much of his life without possessions, unexpectedly became duke shortly before his death owing to the death in childhood of Carlo II (see ref. 41067). This made Carlo duke following the death of his father's half-brother Filiberto II in 1504. After France invaded Savoy in 1535 and held almost all of Carlo's possessions, he spent the rest of his life in near-exile. After F.J. de Lange, it is one of the 33 portraits of the Dukes of Savoy engraved by Georges Tasnière for 'Augustae Regiæque Sabaudæ domus arbor gentilitia', 1702.

The city of Caserta, in the Campania region of Italy, showing its famous palace. Begun in 1752 for Charles VII of Naples, it was only partially completed by his son, Ferdinand IV of Naples. One of the largest buildings in Europe in the 18th century, it is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inscribed underneath is a dedication to Ferdinand IV (1751 - 1825) with a coat of arms in the centre. Engraved by Georg Hackert (1755-1805) after a painting by his brother Philipp (1737 - 1807), during the time when they both held official positions at the Neapolitan court before fleeing the city at the time of the 1799 Revolution. During Philipp Hackert's time in Naples he became a close friend of Goethe, who edited and published the artist's memoirs after his death.

The municipality of Bellaggio on the shore of Lake Como in the Lombardy region or northern Italy. Bellaggio is situated where the lake divides into two narrow arms, the Como (west) arm and Lecco (east) arm. Aquatint after a daguerreotype (an early photographic process), engraved by Johann Jacob Falkeisen (1804-83), Swiss printmaker who worked in Milan until 1838. He later set himself up as a businessman in Asia Minor before returning to Switzerland to curate the museum of Basle.

Locally-published image of the Council in session in Santa Maria Maggiore church, Trento, northern Italy; key below. As part of the Counter-Reformation, it is considered to be one of the Catholic Church's most important councils. It convened between December 13, 1545, and December 4, 1563 in 25 sessions. The council issued condemnations on what it defined as Protestant heresies and defined Church teachings in the areas of Scripture and Tradition, Original Sin, Justification, Sacraments, the Eucharist in Holy Mass and the veneration of saints. By specifying Catholic doctrine on salvation, the sacraments, and the Biblical canon, the Council was answering Protestant disputes.

Portrait, half length in oval, wearing gown, collar and cross suspended from neck. Ferdinando D'Adda (1649-1719) was Prefect of the Congregation of Rites and the Papal Nuncio to James II of England. In 1690 he was made a Cardinal-Priest and in 1715 he was made Cardinal Bishop of Albano.
