A charming post card sized sand picture made out of coloured Isle of Wight sand. It depicts the historic motte-and-bailey Carisbrooke Castle which is located in the village of Carisbrooke, Newport. During the 1600s Charles I was imprisoned at the castle in the months prior to his trial! The castle has a rich and fascinating history.

Cowes is a seaport town on the Isle of Wight. Cowes Castle (1540) was built for coastal defence by Henry VIII; it has been the headquarters of the Royal Yacht Squadron (founded 1815) since 1856. Annual sailing regattas culminate in Cowes Week, in early August.

After being requisitioned by the War Office during the Second World War, the building suffered many years of neglect until it was demolished in 1963. From William Daniell's 'A Voyage Round Great Britain', a series of 308 aquatints published in eight volumes between 1814-1825, described by R.V. Tooley as 'the most important colour plate book on British Topography'.

From an illustrated edition of Legh Richmond's 'The Dairyman's Daughter', telling the story of Elizabeth Wallbridge who was wilful, proud, selfish and irreligious, before being converted by a sermon and becoming devout at 26. However she soon became ill and spent the rest of her life studying the bible, which she discussed with Richmond, dying aged 31. Richmond's account, first published as a tract in 1814, stressed her strength during her suffering and proved to be hugely popular, with a circulation exceeded four million copies in 19 languages by 1828. Wallbridge's grave at Arraton attracted pilgrims and tourists, including Queen Victoria. Richmond (1772-1827) held the joint curacies of St. Mary's Church, Brading and St. John the Baptist Church, Yaverland before becoming rector of Turvey, Bedfordshire in 1805.

Sailing boats close to The Needles, a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise out of the sea off the Isle of Wight, close to Alum Bay. The Needles lighthouse, built in 1859, stands at the end of the formation. Francis Wells (exh. 1897-1938), portrait and landscape painter who studied at the Slade and Royal Academy Schools; lived Milton Abbas, Dorset.

Edition strictly limited to 150 signed artist proofs only (no other state). Robert Herdman-Smith (1879-1945) was born in Liverpool and exhibited at the Royal Academy and Paris Salon. He taught at the Wellington Technical School, New Zealand, from 1902, later returning to England.

View of the Royal residence Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The new Osborne House was built in the style of the Italian Renaissance complete with two pseudo campanile towers between 1845 and 1851. Prince Albert designed the house himself in conjunction with Thomas Cubitt, the London architect and builder whose company also built the main façade of Buckingham Palace. The sale of the Royal Pavilion at Brighton paid for much of the new house's furnishings. The Stationers' Company had published the Stationers' Almanack since 1747, a single-sheet illustrated calendar that recorded significant events of the preceding year.

Parkhurst was originally a military hospital and children's asylum but by 1838 it had become a prison for children. George Hall, the prison governor to whom this print is dedicated, had been Private Secretary to the Governor of South Australia George Gawler, before returning to England. An early advocate of rehabilitation of young offenders, he started the 'Parkhurst Apprentices', a scheme to send his charges to the colonies to learn a trade. Between 1842 and 1852 nearly 1500 boys aged from twelve to eighteen were transported to Australia and New Zealand from Parkhurst Prison. Reputedly hung at Governor's Office, Parkhurst Prison, until 1995.

Locally-published view of West Cowes, Isle of Wight, on the estuary of the River Medina. Shipping, and in foreground, shrimpers and some fishermen in a coracle. Cowes has been a centre of international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. The town gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which occurs annually in the first week of August. George Rowe, artist and lithographer (1796 - 1864).
