Unidentified print depicting riders thrown from their horses by hounds who have caused the horses to rear and fall. While the composition is quite different, the subject of the print is probably inspired by James Gillray's etching of the same name, which also shows three riders thrown from their horses. Four classic English hunting scenes after John Nost Sartorius (1759-c.1828), an artist known for his horse portraits, engraved by Peltro William Tomkins (1759-1840) and James Neagle (1760?-1822). Each plate has lines of verse from 'The Chace' by William Somerville (1675-1742), a poet and keen sportsman. Thomas Bewick illustrated an edition of the poem in 1796. The set was first published in 1790 by John Harris and reissued by him in 1795, making the dates on plates II & IV unlikely. The BM dates Deeley's address in Berwick Street to 1809-1815. The famous painting of the Quorn Hunt of Melton Mowbray preparing for the day. Portraits of (left to right) Massey Stanley, the Earl of Wilton, the Count Matuchevitch, Lord Gardner, W.L.Gardner, W.L. Gilmour, T. Stevens, Sir Frederick Johnstone, Lord Rokeby, Lord Forester, Lord Kinnaird, Rowland Errington, Mr. Errington's servant. Sir Francis Grant was educated at Harrow, and intended to make his career in the legal profession; however his love of art and fox-hunting turned him aside to become a painter. His equestrian portraits and portraits of aristocrats led to royal patronage, including that of Queen Victoria. He became president of the R.A. see E.F. Wilder, 'English Sporting Prints', pp.142-3.
