The Colonel, winner of the St. Leger stakes in 1828. The oldest of the British five classic races, the St. Leger stakes were first held in 1776. Born in 1795, John Frederick Herring spent the first eighteen years of his life in London, before moving to Doncaster. In Yorkshire, he married and began to earn his living as a humble painter of inn signs and coach insignia. Sketching equestrian subjects in his spare time, Herring’s talent was quickly noticed and he soon found himself painting hunters and racehorses for local patrons. He lived for a time in Newmarket, and then in London, where he may have been tutored by a well-known artist of the time, Abraham Cooper.

Publish'd Jan. 1.st. 1789 by J. Harris, Sweet Alley & No. 8 Broad Street.
Mezzotint, printed in colours and hand finished. Plate: 350 x 255mm, (13¾ x 10"). Frame: 415 x 315mm, (16¼ x 12¼"). Small margins, slight time staining on bottom left and right. Laid on eighteenth century blue card, unexamined out of frame.
A portrait of the racehorse Marske by George Stubbs. Marske was sire of the hugely successful horse Eclipse, and was given to the Duke of Cumberland in exchange for a chestnut Arabian. Following the Duke's death he was bought by William Wildman and put to stud. With Eclipse's unbeatable Marske's stud fee doubled and some doubt was cast as to whether Marske had actually been the sire, Wildman sought to remedy this and commissioned Stubbs to paint him and he became the most successful stud in England. Mask is shown standing in a countryside scene by lake.

Pub. By Rock & Co. London 24 June 1849.
22 coloured aquatint engravings. Each image c.95 x 67mm (3¾ x 2½"). Light foxing.
22 plates from 'Portraits of Winning Horses, a Series of Portraits of the Winners of the Derby, Oaks, & St. Leger, From the Year 1842 to 1849. Drawn from Nature and Engraved by Charles Hunt Esqr'. The volume, depicting the winners of the 3 great races over 8 years, was published by Rock Brothers & Payne in 1849. Although the series calls for 24 plates both Siltzer and Lane record only 22 plates, as here: therefore it is probable that only 22 plates were published.
Siltzer p.166. Lane II p.37; Hickman: p.472.

Spark, a famous Hunter which was presented to the Prince of Wales by M.r Fleetwood,
Spark, a famous Hunter which was presented to the Prince of Wales by M.r Fleetwood, after his Royal Highness had done riding him, he was kept as a Stallion in his Majesties Stud at Hampton Court.
James Seymour Pinx. R. Parr Sculp.
Publish'd by John Bowles according to Act of Parliam.t July 4, 1743.
Etching. Sheet 185 x 200mm (7¼ x 8"). Trimmed into plate on three sides, some scuffing and wear, laid on archival paper.
Spark, a decendant of the Darly Arabian, was given by Charles Fleetwood to Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales. He later passed the horse to Lord Baltimore to give to Samuel Ogle, Governor of Maryland, who took the horse to Maryland in 1747. Thus Spark became the first thoroughbred stallion in the colony and the beginning of the American purebred development at the Belair Stud. Probably from the series 'Seventeen Famous Race Horses' engraved by Regimius Parr, mentioned by Siltzer but not listed or dated. As Spark was foaled in 1743 the publication line here is suspect.

His success brought him to the attention of one of George Stubbs's most important patrons, Richard, 1st Earl Grosvenor, a celebrated breeder and racehorse owner, who promptly purchased Sweet William. The horse remained in Lord Grosvenor's ownership thereafter. The original portrait was one of sixteen paintings which Stubbs executed for the Turf Gallery project.
