The Colonel, winner of the St. Leger stakes in 1828. The oldest of the British five classic races, the St. Leger stakes were first held in 1776. Born in 1795, John Frederick Herring spent the first eighteen years of his life in London, before moving to Doncaster. In Yorkshire, he married and began to earn his living as a humble painter of inn signs and coach insignia. Sketching equestrian subjects in his spare time, Herring’s talent was quickly noticed and he soon found himself painting hunters and racehorses for local patrons. He lived for a time in Newmarket, and then in London, where he may have been tutored by a well-known artist of the time, Abraham Cooper.

Doctor Syntax (1811-1838) raced exclusively in the North of England, winning at least thirty-six races in ten seasons from 1814 to 1823. He was retired to stud in 1824 and proved a successful sire of winners, including Ralph, Chapeau d'Espagne and Beeswing, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup in 1842.

Eclipse, the Property of Capt.n O Kelly, was got by Mask when in the Possession of M.r Wildman, he won the Following Prizes, Vizt. in 1769, six Kings Plates of 100 Gunis each at inchester, Canterbury, Newmarket, Salisbury, Lewes & Litchfield most of them he walk'd over the Course alone, No Horse daring to Start against him. At Newmarket 17 April 1770, he beat the famous horse Bucephalus & on the 19th following he won the Kings 100 Guins against some of the most famous Horses & double distanc'd them the Second Heat.

Although Hickman mentions these reprints without venturing a date, he does not include this plate.

Spark, a famous Hunter which was presented to the Prince of Wales by M.r Fleetwood, after his Royal Highness had done riding him, he was kept as a Stallion in his Majesties Stud at Hampton Court.

Spark, a decendant of the Darly Arabian, was given by Charles Fleetwood to Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales. He later passed the horse to Lord Baltimore to give to Samuel Ogle, Governor of Maryland, who took the horse to Maryland in 1747. Thus Spark became the first thoroughbred stallion in the colony and the beginning of the American purebred development at the Belair Stud. Probably from the series 'Seventeen Famous Race Horses' engraved by Regimius Parr, mentioned by Siltzer but not listed or dated. As Spark was foaled in 1743 the publication line here is suspect.

A portrait of the chesnut Suffolk Punch breed, a domestic daught horse used in farming or for pulling artillery. From Professor David Low's (1786-1859) 'The Breeds of the Domesticated Animals of the British Islands' (1842), which contained fifty-six lithographs after paintings by William Shiels (1783-1857). Low, professor of agriculture at Edinburgh university and the founder of an agricultural museum, commissioned Shiels to paint 100 scientifically accurate illustrations of domestic livestock for his collection. A selection of these paintings, many of which depict breeds now extinct, were selected by Low to illustrate his ideas on breeding and preservation of indigenous species.

Sweet William was bred by William Cornforth of Barforth, near Richmond, Yorkshire, and was bought by Lord Bolingbroke, for whom he won his first race in 1772, at the New Market Spring Meeting. His success brought him to the attention of one of George Stubbs's most important patrons, Richard, 1st Earl Grosvenor, a celebrated breeder and racehorse owner, who promptly purchased Sweet William. The horse remained in Lord Grosvenor's ownership thereafter. The original portrait was one of sixteen paintings which Stubbs executed for the Turf Gallery project.

Two dapple grey horses, bridled and blinkered, with a Dalmatian to the left. After David Morier (1702 - 1770). Brought to England from his native Switzerland in 1743 by the Duke of Cumberland who appointed him 'Limner' in 1751 with a salary of £100. After the Duke's death in 1765, royal patronage declined and he died in poverty.
