Attractive portrait of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819 - 1861), who married Queen Victoria on 10 February 1840. In military uniform. As consort he first felt constrained by his position within the Royal Household, however over time he became more involved in public affairs, such as educational reform and the abolition of slavery. He also took the responsibility of running the Queen's household, estates and office. He was similarly heavily involved with the organisation of the Great Exhibition of 1851.
