Two airedale puppies blissfully asleep. Herbert Thomas Dicksee (1862-1942) was an English painter who specialised in paintings of dogs and animals. He studied at the Slade School of Art and his first painting was exhibited in 1881. His paintings were usually done from life; he kept numerous dogs as pets and frequented London Zoo. His daughter, Dorothy was the executor of his will, which directed her to destroy most of the plates for his etchings.

His 1815 expedition set out to find a passage through the Arctic, study the coastlines of Kamchatka and Alaska, and explore the Pacific.

A rare portrait of George Biddell Airy (1801 - 1892), astronomer royal. Half length, seated, to the left, looking at the viewer with his hands together in his lap. In his role as Astronomer Royal between 1835 to 1881, Airy established Greenwich as the location of the prime meridian. His reputation has been tarnished by allegations that, through his inaction, Britain lost the opportunity of priority in the discovery of Neptune.

James or John Aitkin (1752-77), a Scot better known as John the Painter, shown in the dock during his trial for arson attacks on British dockyards during the American War of Independence. A painter by trade, his knowledge of chemicals paint solvents enabled him to make crude incendiary devices. After attacking Portsmouth and Bristol Dockyards, causing a general panic of a large band of arsonists, he was captured, tried and hung at Portsmouth on 10th March 1777. The mizzenmast of HMS Arethusa was taken from the ship and erected at the dockyard entrance, so that the reported 20,000 spectators could all get a good view. It was the highest gallows ever to be used in an execution in England.

Scarce and good satire image showing the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle, held in the autumn of 1818. It (incorrectly) suggests that the Tsar imposes his policy on Wellington, who attended the Conference as Commander-in-Chief of the allied forces, Castlereagh being the British plenipotentiary. Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) stands left wearing a uniform and cocked hat with field-marshal's plume. He faces talking to Alexander I, Tsar of Russia (1777-1825). They both wear giant boots that reach the hips, and being wrinkled at the ankles suggest the trousers of the dandies. Wellington: "One may be allowed a Variety of Mistresses; but I have such a Variety of Masters, I shall not know which to serve first!!!" Alexander: "I think you will be a little Straiten'd in it." One of the Russians: "Our Master has put him in a strait coat now; it will be well if he does not get a Strait Waistcoat by & by."

Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle, which took place between October 1 - November 15, 1818, was the first of the four congresses held by Great Britain, Austria, Prussia, Russia, and France to discuss and take common action on European problems following the Napoleonic Wars (1800-15).

Young gentlemen at a racing meet, arranging refreshments on their stagecoach. By Ebenezer Landells (1808-1860), illustrator and magazine proprietor. Landells was acquainted with journalists as William Makepeace Thackeray and Henry Mayhew, with whom he launched 'Punch, or, the London Charivari', and after selling his share went on to work with other propminent magazines such as the Illustrated London News. A former pupil of Thomas Bewick, Landells' work spans the transition from the years prior to the invention of photography, to the end of the nineteenth century when the traditional documentary function of printmaking had essentially been eliminated.

A view of the Abbasid palace of Qasr al-'Ashiq, built 877-882. From Cain's 'Second Mesopotamian Set', limited to 40. Charles W. Cain (1893-1962) produced 74 etchings and engravings of scenes in Iraq, Persia, India and Burma (Myanmar) between the 1920s and 1930s, likely inspired by his service in the Border Regiment in India and Mesopotamia. With such a distinctive thematic subject Cain gained a strong reputation as an Orientalist printmaker.

Portrait of William Alabaster, the divine; head and shoulders in an oval. Used as the frontispiece to his 'Ecce sponsus venit' of 1633. William Alabaster (1567-1640) was an English poet, playwright, and religious writer. He became a Roman Catholic convert in Spain when on a diplomatic mission as chaplain. His religious beliefs led him to be imprisoned several times; eventually he gave up Catholicism, and was favoured by James I. He received a prebend in St Paul's Cathedral, London.

A native of Alaska. From 'An authentic narrative of a voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty’s ships Resolution and Discovery during the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780 : in search of a North-West passage between the continents of Asia and America…', by William Ellis, published 1782. Ellis was a surgeon's mate during Cook's third voyage, first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution, and gives quite a good history of this expedition. His account was published two years before the 'official' version. Ellis was also an amateur artist of some skill and the illustrations in the book are after his own drawings; they include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska and three of the Northwest Coast.

A view of a very rudimentary settlement at Goulding's Harbour, a side channel of Portlocks Harbor between Sitka and Juneau in Alaska. From George Dixon's 'Voyage round the World; but More Particularly to the North-West Coast of America: Performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon'. This was the account of the first commercial voyage to the Pacific Northwest, attempting to trade sea-otter fur. The crew were the first English visitors to Hawaii since Cook.

Native of Unalaska, Alaska in canoes, from a French edition of James Cook's Third Voyage. Captain James Cook, explorer, cartographer and hydrographer went to command several notable voyages, the first was from 1768-1771. He was led to his commission by the direction of British overseas exploration in 1766 as commander of HM Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages. Cook's journals were published upon his return, and he became something of a hero among the scientific community. Cook's 12 years sailing around the Pacific Ocean contributed much to European knowledge of the area.

Some of La Perouse's crew in trouble in the icy waters of Lituya Bay, Alaska (now part of the Glacier Bay Park & Wilderness), after the capsizing of two cutters, resulting in twenty-one deaths. In normal circumstances the waters are incredibly dangerous, with the spill of three glaciers entering the bay and a tidal difference of 10 feet; but in 1958 a megatsunami was recorded in the bay that destroyed trees to a height of 1,720 feet above sea-level, signifying a wave higher than the Empire State Building. In 1785 Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741-88) was sent by the French to continue Cook's exploration work in the Pacific, in the ships 'Astrolabe' & 'Boussole'. After three years, during which time he visited Chile, California, Alaska, Kamchatka, the Philippines, Japan and Hawaii, he travelled to Australia. Outside Botany Bay he met up with Captain Arthur Phillip's First Fleet, after which he set sail and was never seen again, despite an extensive rescue mission. Fortunately La Pérouse took every oportunity to send his work back to France: one crew member disembarked here at Petropavlovsk and spent a year crossing Russia back to France; later journals, charts and letters he left with the British at Botany Bay. Thus his discoveries were not lost with him, but published posthumously in this work, 'Voyage de la Perouse autour du monde..'.

An Unangan man, a native of Unalaska, one of the Aleutian Islands off mainland Alaska. Russian fur traders called his tribe the Aleut. John Webber (1751-93) travelled with Captain Cook on the Third Voyage (1776-80) as the Official Artist of the expedition, recording the explorer's death at the hand of Hawaiian natives. Most of the illustrations in the Official Account, 'A Voyage to the Pacific', were his.

A plate from 'Cook's Voyage to the Pacific'. A man, head and shoulders facing front and looking towards the viewer, wearing a fur cape and a patterned conical hat with a flattened top, tied under his chin. He has pendants hanging from his ears, with a nose ornament with beaded ends. James Cook entered Prince William Sound in 1778 and named it Sandwich Sound, after his patron the Earl of Sandwich. The editors of Cook's maps changed the name to Prince William Sound, in honor of Prince William, who would later become King William IV. John Webber (1751-93) travelled with Captain Cook on the Third Voyage (1776-80) as the Official Artist of the expedition, recording the explorer's death at the hand of Hawaiian natives.

Cook's ships Resolution and Discovery at anchor under high cliffs in Prince William's Sound, with men in two long boats and many local canoes. Cloud lifts from snow-covered mountains on the far side, gathering into a large cloud in upper right. Engraved by William Ellis after John Webber for 'A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean' (1784), the official account of Captain Cook's Third and final voyage. The English title was 'A View of Snug Corner Cove, in Prince William's Sound'.

Ali Pasha of Yannina (1740-1822), the Ottoman Albanian ruler of the western part of Rumelia, in a rowing boat with six oarsmen and bodyguard, smoking a pipe. From Louis Dupré's ''Voyage à Athènes et à Constantinople''. Lord Byron visited the court of Ai in Ioannina in 1809 and had very mixed feelings about him and his court. Ali Pasha was notorious throughout the region for the cruelties inflicted on his subjects, from torture to rape and even murder. In 1820 the tensions with the Turkish Reforms grew and after two years of fighting the Ottoman forces took hold of Ioannina forcing Ali Pasha to surrender. He was asked to surrender for beheading, which he refused and continued to fight until he was eventually shot.

George Castriot, Scanderbeg (1405-1468), was an Albanian national hero. The son of a prince of North Albania, he was educated in the Muslim faith and kept at the court of Sultan Murad II. The Sultan favoured him by giving him the title bey and an army to command. However when the Ottomans indicated they would attack Albania, Scanderbeg escaped to his homeland, forming a league of princes. By resisting the Ottomans, Scanderbeg receieved assistance from Venice, Naples and Hungary, and the pope.

George Kastrioti (1405-68), an Albanian widely known as Skanderbeg (Lord Alexander). Having been appointed governor of the Sanjak of Dibra in Macedonia by the Ottoman Turks in 1440, he rebelled and rallied the Albanians against the Ottomans, holding them off for two decades, until he died. In 1463 he was appointed chief commander of the crusading forces of Pope Pius II, but the Pope died before the troops were gathered. Skanderbeg is remembered as Albania's most important hero.

A costume plate from John Cam Hobhouse's 'A Journey Through Albania, and other Provinces of Turkey in Europe and Asia, to Constantinople'. Hobhouse (1st Baron Broughton, 1786-1869), met Byron at Trinity College, Cambridge, and travelled with him through Italy, Greece and Turkey, a journey which resulted in this book. Hobhouse became Byron's executor after the poet's death in 1824. Despite being imprisoned in Newgate for writing a Radical pamphlet in 1819 Hobhouse became a successful Whig politician, serving in government as Secretary at War, Chief Secretary for Ireland, First Commissioner of Woods and Forests and President of the Board of Control. He became a Privy Councillor in 1832.
