An evocative view on the River Dart, Devon. This HMS Britannia to the right of the composition started life as HMS Prince of Wales. She was a 121-gun screw-propelled first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on January 25, 1860. The advent of ironclads had made her obsolete before launch, so she was placed in reserve and never fitted for sea. In 1869 she was renamed Britannia and began service as a cadet training ship at Dartmouth, replacing the previous Britannia in that role. She was hulked in September 1909, sold in September 1914, and broken up at Blyth in July 1916. David Law (1831 - 1901), etcher and landscape painter, born in Edinburgh; moved to London in 1850s, one of the founder of the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers, Engravers in 1881. Died in Sussex.

He served at Agincourt, was captain of Harfleur 1421 - 1422, treasurer of the household to Henry V, and chamberlain to Henry VI, and on 13 Nov. 1437 was created Baron Bardolf. On his death in 1441 the peerage became extinct. Rare.

A view of Dilston Hall, at Dilston, near Corbridge, Northumberland, at one time the seat of James Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater, with three columns of text lamenting his death. Radclyffe, grandson of Charles II and Moll Davis, began the construction of a grand mansion to replace the old Hall, but the works was never completed as he was beheaded for his part in the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion. Dilston Hall came into the hand of the Fofeit Estates Commission. After a corrupt sale was annulled in 1731, the Greenwich Hospital Act 1735 directed that the estate's income should be used to complete the construction of Greenwich Hospital. The Greenwich Commissioners ordered its demolition in 1765 (the year before the publication of this plate), leaving standing only the castle tower and the chapel: the castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building.

By Frank Henry Mason (1875-1965), an artist best known for his maritime, shipping, coastal and harbour paintings and as a creator of art deco travel and British railway posters. From 1900 onwards he exhibited at the RA, and was awarded R.I. in 1929.
