A dead jay tied by its legs and suspended from a hook; in a frame. From a series of dead quarry by Edouard Traviès (1809 - 1865). Traviès was born in Doullens in the Somme district of France in March 1809, the younger brother of the caricaturist Charles Joseph Traviès de Villier (1804-1859). Throughout his career he concentrated on natural history subjects, both in watercolour (he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1831 and 1866) and lithography, as here.

The print appears in 'The History and Amours of Rhodope', written and published by Diemar. Jupiter in the form of an eagle perches on his throne which is draped in cloth or perhaps his discarded clothes. Behind this a naked nymph dances among the clouds. In the background stands a pyramid. In the foreground a wreath frames the lower portion of the image.

Large townscape by Elisha Kirkall (1681/2-1742), one of the most distinctive of British engravers. Often printed in a blue-green ink which itself was innovative at a time when almost all British prints were still printed in black, Kirkall used the mezzotint technique which in the 17th and 18th century was used predominantly for portraits and domestic subjects, and used it to render naval and topographical subjects.

George Simon, [Viscouint Nuneham] 2nd Earl Harcourt, [1736 - 1809] politician, statesman and gifted amateur and friend of Sandby. Viscouint Nuneham went of the grand tour in 1755 and prior to leaving had had lessons in drawing from both, Knapton and Cozens. Sandby was a frequent visitor to Nuneham Courtney and the drawings and etchings of Sandby and Nuneham give insight to what was a long and enduring friendship. On his return from Italy Nuneham became MP for St. Albans 1761-8, Master of the Horse for Queen Charlotte 1790. Married 26 September 1765 his cousin Elizabeth, daughter of George, 1st Lord Vernon and Martha his wife (sister of 1st Earl Harcout). Also known by Newnham & Nuneham as shown in the way the etchings are signed.

These two are said by Fagan to be the Old Testament figures Judah and Tamar. After Annibale Carracci (1560 - 1609). Numbered 'No.2' lower right.

He exhibited work at the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts 1822-37, and was also a lithographer.
The Gainsborough picture was in the collection of Monsieur D'Esenfans in 1796. Rare.

Plate seven from Salomon Gessner's series of etchings 'Folge der Landschaften in antikem Geschmack'. Gessner (1730-88) achieved international fame as a writer and etched illustrations to his texts as well as producing standalone series of etchings such as these, as well as paintings and drawings (of which the most significant collection is in the Kunsthaus Zurich). His son Conrad Gessner was also a significant artist.

Landscape with wooden bridge over a river at left, leading into a cottage surrounded by trees on the opposite bank. (Charles) Henry Bellenden Ker (1780-1871), a lawyer active in the Boundary Commission just before the Reform Act of 1852 and amateur artist. As a young man he was patron to William Blake but Blake had to take legal steps to get paid.

Landscapes by Johann Georg Wille (1715 - 1808), latterly known as Jean Georges Wille. Born near Koenigsberg in Germany and came to Paris in 1736 where began etching genre pictures and landscapes from the northern schools to complement his practice as a portrait engraver. His studio became one of the most important printmaking centres. This etching was published in 'Variétés de gravures', a series of thirty-seven plates representing various subjects, engraved by Wille from his own designs between 1738 and 1801. It appeared in the volume on a sheet with two other prints.

Five landscapes by John Inigo Richards (1731-1810), a scene painter for London theatres and a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768. As their secretary 1788-1810 he had an apartment in Somerset House. When his brother-in-law, Thomas Wignell, proposed building a theatre in Philadelphia Richards obtained Thomas Greenway’s plans for the Theatre Royal, Bath, which was used to build the 'New Theatre' (later renamed the Chestnut Street Theatre). This was the first purpose-built theatre in North America. American interest.

Frontispiece to Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713), designed by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722). Van der Werff was acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.
