After she rejected his advances on several occasions he had her arrested and tried before himself, he sent her to a brothel where she suffered rape but she refused to turn her back on God. The prefect called her back and had her tortured, cutting off her breasts, she was eventually saved from torture by St Peter who healed her wounds. St. Agatha is shown holding a plate containing her breasts. A woodcut cut by the monogrammist BTA, probably cut for a Carmelite order in Venice in the first half of the 16th century.

The Tate records that ''it is very probably identifiable with a work exhibited by Reynolds at the Royal Academy in 1785, and entitled simply 'a little girl''' and that Sir Robert Edgcumbe, a Victorian descendant of Reynolds, identified her as the artist's great-niece Theophila Gwatkin (1782-1844).

Bartolozzi erased Cosway's name in the published state after Gainsborough remonstrated.

Etching and engraving with very large margins, 18th century watermark paper; platemark 265 x 370mm (10½ x 14½"). Fine.
Engraving resembling an early work by Titian (Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland) representing the three ages of man through the putti (infancy), man and woman in the opposite corner (adulthood), and an old man contemplating as skull (old age). However, the omission of the old man in this print and various other small differences suggest the print was made from a copy. This plate was first executed by Valentin Lefevre in the 17th century as part of a famous set of engravings, which were republished in 1749. By this time the plates were worn and required retouching, which in this case was carried out by German engraver J.G. Seuter (1717-1809). Seuter often signed himself in the Italianised 'Gottifredo Saiter', as here. Another edition, from which this plate comes, was published by Teodor Viero of Venice in 1786.

The widow Agrippina, seated, mourns with her head resting against an urn inscribed with her husband Germanicus’s name, comforted by one of her daughters, who touches her neck. A naked boy stands at her feet, leaning back with his hand on his brother's head; behind two young women stand, their arms around each other. A young man beside them buries his head in his hands, another son at the left bows his head; a crown, laurels and a statue of an eagle in the right foreground. In 5 AD Agrippina married Germanicus, her second cousin and step-grandson of the Emperor Augustus. Agrippina had nine children by Germanicus, including the future emperor Gaius (Caligula). Agrippina was very popular among the Roman people, not least because of her marriage to the much-loved Germanicus, whose ashes she brought back to Rome after his death in the east in AD 21. Her strength and popularity aroused the suspicions of the emperor Tiberius and his right-hand man Sejanus, head of the Praetorian guards and she and her eldest son were banished to the Pontian islands on the Bay of Naples in AD 29. Four years later, following a beating so severe that she was blinded in one eye, Agrippina starved herself to death. Her popularity, however, ensured a decent burial, and she was laid to rest at Rome in the Mausoleum of Augustus.

William Aikman (1682-1731), was a portrait painter who studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He took up a career as an artist and, by 1703, was painting portraits professionally in Edinburgh. He sold his family estate near Arbroath to enable him to travel unfettered to Europe to complete his artistic training. Aikman spent three years in Rome, before visiting Turkey and then spent a further period in Rome. He returned to Scotland in 1712, where he made the acquaintance of the poet Allan Ramsay and found an enthusiastic patron in John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, who persuaded Aikman to move to London. He established a distinguished portrait practice in London, portraying royalty and many members of the aristocracy.

William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882), Novelist. Ainsworth was an author of popular historical romances. He initially studied law but left it for literature, publishing his first novel anonymously in 1826. His first success came with Rookwood (1834), featuring the highwayman Dick Turpin, which led many reviewers to hail him as the successor to Sir Walter Scott. Jack Sheppard (1839), the story of an eighteenth-century burgular, was equally successful, but its supposed glamorisation of crime proved controversial. From then on Ainsworth switched to historical novels based on places rather than criminals, including The Tower of London (1840),Old St. Paul's, A Tale of the Plague and the Fire (1841), and The Lancashire Witches (1849).

By the time this print was published, however, the artistocracy had become involved. Lynn's name had been removed from the card (he was declared bankrupt in 1844), and the 'Grand National' (which some consider to have begun in the 1830s) was officially adopted in 1847 for the national racing event at the course.
