Thomas Leversidge Fish bought Knowle in 1821, spending a fortune furnishing the house and grounds with an extraordinary collection of objets d'art, exotic trees and plants, birds and animals including kangaroos, gazelles, alpacas, buffalos, parakeets, peacocks and pelicans. Fish allowed tours of the house every Monday until a theft made him close it to the public. This plate was published in the 'Guide to Illustrations and View of Knowle Cottage, Sidmouth': as Abbey describes it as 'folding' it is likely to have also been issued separately, as this example has no fold.

Thomas Assheton Smith (the elder, 1752 -1828), landowner who induced Parliament to pass an act enclosing the common land of Llanddeiniolen parish, adding over 2,600 acres to his land holdings, from which he mined slate. Subsequent rioting was put down by a cavalry unit. A close friend of George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea, Smith became one of cricket's main patrons following the establishment of Marylebone Cricket Club in 1787. This portrait was commissioned by Caernarfon Corporation, who paid Beechey £157.10s. It is now in National Museum Cardiff. Cricket interest.

Full length portrait of Sir Thomas Andrew Lumisden Strange (1756-1841) in judical robes. From 1789 to 1797 he was the sixth Chief Justice of Nova Scotia; in 1798 he was appointed Recorder of Fort St. George (Madras), becoming Chief Justice with the introduction of the Supreme Court two years later. An important Indian judge.

Three-quarter portrait of Brigadier Thomas Fox Strangways (1790-1854) of the Royal Artillery, in uniform. a gloved hand on the hilt of his sword and the other holding his fur shapka. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 he was wounded so badly he was not expected to live. Nearly forty years later he was in command of the Royal Artillery during the Crimean War, when a shell took off his leg during the Battle of Inkermann, causing his death an hour later.

Full length portrait of Sir Henry Sullivan (1785-1814), 2nd Baronet, in uniform, his shako resting on a cannon. Despite being a soldier serving in the Napoleonic Wars, he was elected MP for both Rye and Lincoln in 1812. He stood down for Rye, but remained MP for Lincoln until his death, unsuprisingly playing little part in Parliamentary business. He was killed in 1814, during a sortie by the French garrison of Bayonne Thouvenot against the besieging British Army, despite the unofficial news of Napoleon's abdication reaching both sides. His memorial plaque is in the Church of St Nicholas, Thames Ditton, Surrey.

Portrait of Jeremy Taylor (1613 - 1667), a cleric in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. The print depicts Taylor in clerical dress standing on a pedestal on which is written "Mercurius Christianus" and holding a book in his right hand. behind is a landscape with the figure of Christ in the clouds, a ray of light reaching Taylor lettered, "Ad te quacunque vocas dulcissime Jesu" (To you, wheresover, speaks the most sweet Jesus"). In the lower right, a devil emerges from the mouth of hell holding a candle and offering a bag of money to Taylor. He is sometimes known as the "Shakespeare of Divines" for his poetic style of expression, and he is frequently cited as one of the greatest prose writers in the English language.

A satirical depiction of the British army in Spain shows overweight soldiers, exhausted after retreating from the French. Wellington (1769-1852) remarks to a particularly portly officer, “All Pod,” surprised at his survival. The officer, echoing Falstaff from Henry IV, replies that discretion is the better part of valour, and he preserved his life by taking “an Hour’s Law”, a head start like that granted to game in a hunt.

The scene portrays two sons of Tipu Sultan descending the steps of a palace toward a group of British officers. Tipu Sultan ascended to the throne of the South Indian kingdom of Mysore in 1782, where he established a sophisticated and modern court centered around his palace in Seringapatam. Renowned as the "Tiger of Mysore," Tipu was a formidable opponent of British expansion in India throughout his reign. He was ultimately defeated and killed during the British assault on Seringapatam on 4 May 1799. In the aftermath of his death, the British consolidated their control over Mysore, installed a compliant dynasty on the throne, and detained Tipu Sultan’s sons at Vellore Fort.

Full-length portrait of Tipu Sultan (1751-1799), ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore based in South India. He was a pioneer of rocket artillery. He deployed rockets against advances of British forces and their allies during the Anglo-Mysore Wars, including the Battle of Pollilur and Siege of Srirangapatna. Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali used their French-trained army in their struggle with the British, he negotiated with the British in 1784 with the Treaty of Mangalore which ended the war in status quo ante bellum. Tipu remained an enemy of the British East India Company. He initiated an attack on British-allied Travancore in 1789. In the Third Anglo-Mysore War, he was forced into the Treaty of Seringapatam, losing a number of previously conquered territories, including Malabar and Mangalore. In the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, a combined force of British East India Company troops supported by the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad defeated Tipu. He was killed on 4 May 1799 while defending his stronghold of Seringapatam.

The Greek army, led by Achilles, drive back the Amazons over a narrow bridge, with women and horses falling into the river below. Troy, in flames, can be seen through the arch of the bridge. The original painting is in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

Satire on the suitors of Catherine Tylney-Long (fl.1825). Townsend (1760-1832), the Bow Street officer, pursues a fleeing man marked “Scot,” while Wellesley-Pole hides behind him, reaching toward his retreating rival. From a balcony, a young woman warns Wellesley-Pole not to risk himself; he replies that he’ll let “the arm of justice” handle it. Townsend vows to punish the man for opposing the Irish Secretary. A signpost points to Norwich and Chippenham.
