[The Decision of the Doubts Concerning Mambrino's Helmet]
[The Decision of the Doubts Concerning Mambrino's Helmet] Don Quixote
Stothard del Blake sculp
[Published as the Act directs, by Harrison & Co., May 4, 1782]
Engraving, sheet 165 x 105mm (6½ x 4"). Trimmed.
Scene from 'Don Quixote', in which Quixote gets the barber's basin that he believes to be the helmet of the fictional Moorish king Mabrino. Illustration to 'The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote, Translated from the Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, by Dr Smollett'. Smollett's translation was first published in 1755 but was republished along with other of his works in the 1780s, with engravings by the poet and artist William Blake (1757-1827). This early work was one of many Blake engraved from designs by his friend Thomas Stothard, Britain's most prolific book illustrator. While establishing himself as a copy engraver in the early 1780s, Blake was also studying at the Royal Academy and developing the highly personal approach he used in his original watercolours.

'The Shipwreck'. A young sailor watches in horror from the shore as a ship is hurled by a huge wave towards rocks on a tropical island or coastline; he is restrained by one white and two black companions. Other figures to shore; praying figure and black slave aboard the doomed ship. Charles Melchior Descourtis (1753 - 1820), engraved the set of six 'Paul et Virginie' after Jean Frédéric Schall. While this has a similar theme it isn't one from the set. This print is, however, nearly identical to 'Le Naufrage de Virginie' (Mixelle after Lambert), which we also have in stock (see our ref. 28894). While the image sizes are identical, 'Le Naufrage de Viriginie' has a border around the edge, was printed from a larger plate, and shows significant differences to the waves and clouds.

An illustration to John Gay's 'The Spell'. The character of Hobnelia stands in the clearing of a woodland, looking down at the 'unbroken paring' or peel from the apple which lies on the ground behind her. She smiles and holds her hands open, realising the peel has formed the initial of her 'true love', Luberkin. Six lines of Gay's poem 'The Spell' are inscribed below.

Strephon & Myra.
Strephon & Myra. O Myra, Why_ Are you so shy!_Thou nature's best invention! [/] Your Stephron sues, _Can you refuse_To yild to his pretention.
Published 26 Nov.r. 1795 by Laurie & Whittle, 53 Fleet Street London.
Stipple. Sheet: 160 x 135mm (6¼ x 5¼"). Trimmed to plate.
Scene set within an oval in which a young man leans over a reclining woman while holding her face in his hands. Strephon is the name often given to the lover in pastoral verse, a genre which flourished during th 18th Century, while the name Myra is also a name of poetic invention. The manner in which Strephon holds Myra and leans over her is slightly unsettling, which along with the verse beneath which lacks much of the idealism of pastoral poetry, serves perhaps, to satirise the pastoral genre.

Sweet Poll of Plymouth.
Sweet Poll of Plymouth.
Printed, 6th March, 1786 for R. Sayer, Map, Chart & Printseller, No. 53, Fleet Street, London.
Mezzotint. Sheet: 150 x 110mm (6 x 4¼''). Trimmed.
A scene by the sea showing a young woman weeping as her lover sails away in a ship shown in the distance. Poll of Plymouth was a character in a romantic poem but the character was then taken on as a comic figure in satirical prints, often shown as a prostitute working in the docks. 'Black-eyed Sue and Sweet Poll of Plymouth' published by Laurie & Whittle takes two poetic characters and turns them into prostitutes being exported to Botany Bay.

[The Sylph]
[The Sylph]
Stothard del Sharp sculpt
Published January 1st 1788 by W. Lowndes
Engraving, platemark 190 x 205mm (7½ x 8"). Thread margins; slight foxing. Unfinished proof.
Illustration to the novel 'The Sylph' by the political hostess Georgiana Cavendish, duchess of Devonshire (1757-8016). Unhappily married to the duke of Devonshire, ensconced in the Devonshire House Circle, and drinking and gambling heavily, Georgiana published the book, a roman-à-clef about high society, anonymously. (It was an open secret that Georgiana was the author, although she was not publicly exposed). Like Sheridan's 'School for Scandal' (which emerged from the same milieu), it scandalized critics for its portrayal of the aristocracy as drunks, blackmailers, wife-beaters and adulterers. In this scene, the male figure, who while walking had noticed two beautiful women, pursued them but stumbled and fell as the earth gave way. They, believing him to be seriously injured, rushed to help him (the male being in no hurry to disabuse them of that notion). Engraving after the most prolific book illustrator of the late 18th century, Thomas Stothard, by engraver William Sharp (1749-1824). An important contributor to the revival of the classical style of engraving in England (in the lineage of Sir Robert Strange and William Woollett), some of Sharp's best-known works were after major pictures by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West. Sharp refused to join the Royal Academy on the inferior 'associate' basis which was the only way for specialist engravers to join at the time), Sharp's importance was nonetheless demonstrated by the honorary memberships bestowed on him by the Imperial Academy of Vienna and the Royal Academy of Munich.
