Chicksands, a Gilbertine priory founded c.1150. Bought by the Osborn family in 1576, it was remodelled by Isaac ware in the 1740s, and remained in the family until 1936 when it was sold to the Crown Commissioners. It is now a Grade 1 listed building. Published in a series of views of important English gardens.

The High Street, Chiddingstone, a village in the Sevenoaks area of Kent. Chiddingstone is unique in that, apart from the church and the Castle, the entire village is owned by the National Trust. In the 18th Century, Hugh Cholmondeley, 1st Earl of Cholmondeley had created gardens around the house, both kitchen gardens and orchards to provide food for the household, and also pleasure gardens. They would have been formal in style as they were laid out by George London.

A plan of the house and gardens of Claremont in Surrey. The original house was built by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1708, in 1768 it was bought by Sir Robert Cliver who commissioned Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to rebuild the house and redesign the gardens. In 1816 it was bought for the nation as a wedding present for George IV's daughter Princess Charlotte and her husband Prince Leopold Saxe-Coburg, it passed down through the Saxe-Coburg family until 1922 when it was supposed to be inherited by the Duke of Saxe-Coburg, but as he had served as a German general in WW1 the inheritance was disallowed. It became a school in 1930.

Garden plan from Henry Hulsbergh's "Vitruvius Britannicus" series by C. Campbell. The road along the top the 'Guildford Road to London'. Claremont is a beautiful garden surrounding a small lake and featuring an unusual grass amphitheatre. The garden's creation and development has involved great names in garden history, including Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and 'Capability' Brown. In 1726 it was described as 'the noblest of any in Europe' and the garden today is of national importance. The highlight as seen in the upper part of this map is Belvedere, which was built to a design by Sir John Vanbrugh, and from the first floor views could be enjoyed of the whole garden and across many miles of countryside.

Distant view of Clifton Hall, Lancashire, built in the 18th century, at the time it was occupied by Benjamin Heywood, one of the founders of Heywood's bank. It was subsequently a private asylum, while Clifton railway station was built near to the hall. Amateur lithograph by the army officer and politician Frederick William Trench (c.1777-1859). Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced).

A view using Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original design, with the Egyptian-style pylons topped with spinxes that were not used in the completed bridge. The bridge's foundation stone was laid in 1831, but work was stopped almost immediately by the Bristol Riots. Restarted in 1836 the project continued to be dogged with political and financial difficulties and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. Brunel died prematurely aged 53 years in 1859 but the Bridge was completed as his memorial and finally opened in 1864.

A view using Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original design, with the Egyptian-style pylons topped with spinxes that were not used in the completed bridge. After an 1829 competition to design the bridge was annulled when Thomas Telford tried to declare himself the winner, the second competition (1830) was won by the 24-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The foundation stone was laid in 1831, but work was stopped almost immediately by the Bristol Riots. Restarted in 1836 the project continued to be dogged with political and financial difficulties and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. Brunel died prematurely aged 53 years in 1859 but the Bridge was completed as his memorial and finally opened in 1864.

A view showing the proposed plan for the bridge linking Clifton with Leigh Woods in Somerset, with the Egyptian-style pylons topped with spinxes that were not used in the completed bridge. Plans to build a bridge were discussed as early as 1753, however, the bridge was not completed until 1864. The final design was drawn up by William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw and was based on an earlier design by I.K. Brunel.
