Contemporary broadside accompanying image as follows: William Haviside, Esq. Commander.- This fine ship was out-ward bound from London for China, and was driven on shore by a heavy gale, near Eastbourne, Sussex on Sunday morning, the 3rd February, 1822. Her Extensive Cargo was taken out without loss [excepting damage by water] under the direction and management of Mr. J. B.Stone, of New Haven, Agent to Lloyd's. She lay in this situation from the 3d of February to the 22d, when she was got off, to the great gratification of many thousands of Spectators, she was then conducted away for Deptford, by two Steam Vessels, which were in attendance for that purpose. She arrived safe at Deptford, on the 24th of February, with a prospect of being speedily repaired to proceed onto her original destination.

The 'National Gallery of Practical Science, Blending Instruction with Amusement', which contained some 250 machines, devices and models such as a pocket thermometer, a gas mask, an oxyhydrogen microscope, a steam gun and, later, demonstrations of daguerreotypes, electricity and magnetism. The gallery was situated in the Lowther Arcade, a glass-domed arcade near the Strand in London's West End. The gallery closed in the 1840s, and the site went through various incarnations before the Lowther Arcade was demolished in 1904 to make way for Coutts' Bank.

Princess Adelheid of Hohenlohe-Langenburg was the daughter of Queen Victoria's elder half-sister Princess Feodora of Leiningen. Princess Adelheid, known as Ada, visited England with her mother and siblings in September 1840.

Founded in 1754 by William Shipley as the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, the RSA moved into a purpose-built building designed by the Adam Brothers (James and Robert Adam) in their Adelphi development,. This scene shows the Great Room, with its sequence of six paintings by Irish artist James Barry: called "The progress of human knowledge and culture". A plate from Ackermann's 'Microcosm of London' (1808-9), a landmark publication in the documentation of London, bringing together two specialist artists, Thomas Rowlandson to design the figures and Augustus Pugin to provide the architectural draughtsmanship. The result was a series of scenes unprecedented in their combination of vivid activity and architectual accuracy.

The uniform of an admiral including a bicorn hat, also wearing the Order of the Bath. From 'The Costume of Great Britain', a book containing 60 plates of people at work and scenes of everyday life. William Henry Pyne (1769-1843), the son of a London weaver who became an artist and writer, was commissioned to write and illustrate the book by the publisher, William Miller of Albermarle Street, London. The illustrations are particularly notable as they portray British life on the eve of the Industrial Revolution.

View in the Admiralty Islands, in the Manus Province of Papua New Guinea, with locals spear-fishing from canoes. In 1788 Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse set sail from Botany Bay and was never seen again. Despite the upheaval of the French Revolution the National Assembly was moved to send an expedition in search of their lost hero, 1791-3, under Chevalier Bruni d'Entrecasteaux. Despite finding no trace of La Perouse, losing its commander and many crew to scurvy, and finally splitting between royalist and republican factions, the expedition was judged a success because of the important observations made by the expedition's scientists, especially in Australia. This account, compiled by the expedition's botanist, Jacques Julien Houtou de Labillardière, was published as 'Relation du voyage à la recherche de La Pérouse', with natural history plates by Redouté and Audebert. The work even has its own abbreviation in botantical literature, 'Voy.Rech.Perouse'.

Son of George III, he went to Hanover in 1791 to receive military training under the supervision of the Hannoverian commander Field Marshal von Freytag, fighting in the War of the Spanish Succession. The pair were briefly captured before the Battle of Hondschoote, in which 40,000 Frenchmen defeated 24,000 British and Hanoverian soldiers, capturing 6 flags and all of the Duke of York's artillery.

The Royal Hospital Haslar in Gosport, Hampshire, began as a Royal Navy hospital in 1753. It has a long and distinguished history in the medical care of service personnel in peacetime and in war. In 1902 the hospital became known as the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar, and in the 1940s, RNH Haslar set up the country's first 'blood bank' to help treat wounded soldiers from the Second World War. The Royal Hospital Haslar officially closed as the last military hospital in the UK in 2007, and is now used by the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust to treat both military and civilian patients.

Westminster Hospital was founded in 1719, following a meeting in a coffee house, where four men met to discuss a 'charitable proposal for relieving the sick and needy and other distressed persons”. In 1834 a medical school attached to the hospital was formally founded. Westminster Hospital moved from Marsham Street to become Chelsea and Westminster Hospital at the old St Stephen's Hospital site in 1994. From the hand of and signed by John Ayrton Paris, M.D. (1785 - 1856). He had been elected a fellow of the College of Physicians 30 Sept. 1814, and from 1819 to 1826 lectured there on materia medica. He attained considerable practice as a physician, and was famous for his resource in treatment and skill in prescribing. In making out what was the matter, he trusted much to the patient's general appearance, asked only a few questions, and made no very minute physical examination. His prescriptions were remarkable for their efficiency, and for the minute care with which they were drawn up. His ‘Pharmacologia’ published in 1812, and revised by him up to the ninth edition in 1843, was a general treatise on materia medica and therapeutics. It was long the standard book on its subject, and he made five thousand guineas by its sale. He published in 1823 a book on ‘Medical Jurisprudence,’ which still continues to be the only English work on the subject with any pretensions to literary value. His portrait, by Skottowe, has been engraved by Bellin, and hangs in the dining-room of the College of Physicians of London. His bust, by Jackson, is at Falmouth, in the hall of the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society. Paper watermarked 1807.

In 1834 a medical school attached to the hospital was formally founded. Westminster Hospital moved from Marsham Street to become Chelsea and Westminster Hospital at the old St Stephen's Hospital site in 1994. One of the signatories is Sir Anthony Carlisle (1768 - 1840). After attending the lectures of John Hunter, Baillie, and Cruikshank, and being the resident pupil of Mr. Henry Watson, surgeon to Westminster Hospital, he succeeded to the surgeoncy in 1793, and held the office till his death in 1840. Carlisle became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1800, and in 1804 delivered the Croonian lecture on ‘Muscular Motion,’ following it by another on the ‘Muscles of Fishes’ in 1805. He contributed other papers on biological subjects to the Philosophical and Linnean ‘Transactions,’ the ‘Philosophical Magazine,’ &c. Carlisle was long a member of the council of the College of Surgeons (from 1815) and an examiner (from April 1825), holding these appointments till death. He took great interest in Westminster Hospital, and was largely instrumental in raising funds for the new building. Carlisle was neither a brilliant anatomist nor physiologist, but was a fairly good surgeon. His introduction of the thin-bladed, straight-edged amputating knife, in place of the old clumsy crooked one, and his use of the simple carpenter's saw make his name chiefly worthy of note.

'Machinery capable of extruding hollow tubes was patented as early as 1810 by Johann Deyerlein (British Patent No.3319), further developed by Yoseph Hamilton in 1813 (British Patent No.3685)'. 'Use of a screw to provide continuous pressure on the contents of the hopper which allowed an uninterrupted flow of clay into the moulds (British Patent No.3685, 1813, Joseph Hamilton)'.

Aeneas carrying his father away from Troy before beginning the journey that will lead to the foundation of Rome. Illustration to an episode featuring in Virgil's 'The Aeneid'. From "The Most Capital Paintings in England", a series of engravings in five volumes produced in late 1760s-1786, the first three (1769 to 1773) originally published under the title Sculptura Britannica. These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell who promoted the interests of artists, engravers and patrons, establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints.
