Plan of Turin as Besieged in 1706.
I. Basire Sculp.
For Mr Tindal's Continuation of Mr Rapin's History of England. [London, James & Paul Knapton, 1751.]
Engraved map. 390 x 480mm (15¼ x 19"). Original binding folds, trimmed into plate at top, as issued.
A plan of Turin under siege by the French during the War of the Spanish Succession. The siege lasted two months and the French were on the point of victory when Prince Eugene of Savoy arrived with a relief army. Caught between Eugene's army and Turin's garrison, the siege collapsed, causing Marlborough to write 'I not only esteem, but I really love that Prince'. Nicholas Tindal (1687-1774), at one time Chaplain to Greenwich Hospital, first published a translation of Frenchman Paul de Rapin's 'History of England' in 1727, running to thirteen volumes; in 1732 it was enlarged with his own notes and maps. This map was published in 'A summary of Mr Rapin de Thoyras's History of England, and Mr Tindal's Continuation, from the Invasion of Julius Caesar, to the End of the Reign of King George I. Illustrated With Medals, Plans of Battles, Towns, and Sieges', 1751.

'Campo Santo' can be literally translated as 'holy field', because it is said to have been built around a shipload of sacred soil from Golgotha, brought back to Pisa from the Fourth Crusade by the archbishop of Pisa in the 12th century. This view shows some construction taking place on the main dome, to the left, with a number of figures, and a horse drawn cart, on the path in the foreground. Tinted lithograph. Sheet size: 290 x 380mm (11½ x15").
A detailed view of the front and side facades of the Siena Cathedral, a medieval church in Siena, Tuscany. The cathedral itself was originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure by Giovanni Pisano, who was able to oversee his work until about 1296 when he abruptly left Siena, reportedly over creative differences with the Opera del Duomo, the group that oversaw the construction and maintenance of the Siena cathedrals. The church has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The areas around and above the doors, as well as the columns between the portals, are richly decorated with acanthus scrolls, allegorical figures and biblical scenes, which can be seen in the centre. M.A.T.W. [Mary Anne Theresa Whitby] Newlands [c.1828].
Rare lithograph. Printed area 105 x 140mm (4 x 5½").
The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).

Etching, signed in pencil. Plate 165 x 381mm. 6½ x 15".
A steam tug towing a tall-ship into the Grand Harbour, Valetta, Malta. William L. Wyllie (1851-1931) was born on July 5th 1851, in London. He attended Heatherley’s art school until the age of fifteen, leaving to study at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Turner Medal at the age of eighteen. In the early 1870’s Wyllie became an illustrator for the Graphic and also held several exhibitions at the galleries of the Fine Art Society. In 1889 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited his work in 1901. Wyllie spent much of his time at sea working for the White Star Shipping Line. He also served in the Royal Navy during WWI, painting seascapes and coastal landscapes. His etchings and watercolours showing working life on the Thames and the Medway brought him widespread popularity. Later in his life he played an important role in the restoration of the Victory. Wyllie died on the 6th April 1931 in Hampstead, and scouts from the 1st Portchester Sea Scout Troop, which he had founded, rowed his coffin across Portsmouth Harbour for his burial at Portchester Castle.

[n.d., c.1666]
Engraving, sheet 490 x 340mm (19¼ x 13¼"). Trimmed inside platemark; fold through centre. Small tear on right edge.
Abraham van der Hulst (1619 - 1666), Dutch admiral. Van der Hulst captained the 'Groningen' ship during the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-4) and subsequently blockaded Portugal in the later stages of the Dutch-Portuguese war (1601-61). He then returned to action against the English in the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-7). He fought in the Battle of Lowestoft, a heavy defeat for the Dutch in which van der Hulst's conduct saw him promoted to admiral. He was second-in-command to Cornelis Tromp in the 'Four Days Battle' (11 June to 14 June) off the Isle of Thanet, which remains one of the longest naval engagements in history. Van der Hulst commanded the ship the 'Spiegel' and was shot in the chest by a bullet and died on June 12th. This print commemorates his participation in the battle, which can be seen taking place in the background. Van der Hulst was buried in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, where a marble tomb by Artus de With was erected in his memory.
